i dont think anime should be in school because it would most likely distract us from doing our school work. besides... everyone knows that the teachers are trying to make us miserable in the first place Wink Wink jk

If there was some way of convincing a school that there are good reasons students should watch anime the school would probobly allow it but unfortunately there aren't enough (that I know of at least).

Anime might get into the class room if there were anime versions of some of the 'classics' Other than that I really don't see it ever going to be in school. We don't even have a Japanesses class at my school so its not even going to be there.

Well, in a beginning art class I took a few years back, we watched Speed Racer. Does that count?

In an ideal world, teachers would hand out an anime series to the entire class, and have them watch it for homework. Then, you would have to write an essay on its underlying meaning/insight to human nature. Not gonna happen, be it'd be cool. If this was where anime makers were trying to be, they would have more educational anime. Having Excel teach history would be preety funny. heheh....and showing a hentai for sex ed. Lol, thats so ridiculous.

Hell yea! Definately, since I'm the only one out of like 1500 middle schoolrts watch anime. If it was to be put in school, well at least they'll finally know what in the bloody hell I'm talking about...

Hah! Anime is in schools, in Japan at least. A transfer student to Japan last semester was talking about it in my Japanese language class. He took a class, I think is was on filmography or something, that also included several works by Miyazaki and Shin Seiki Evangelion amongst others. This is a college class, folks. They actually showed Akira during one of the classes.
Awsome, huh?
So yes, it's doable, and yes, it works. I'm all for it. Which do you prefer, Eva or something like Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, etc.?

I can easily see anime being a college level class, especially in a filmography type class. At the same time, I can't ever see anime being shown in public schools. Shows like Akira, Eva, Grave of the Fireflies, and even FLCL have a great depth to them that a student could possibly write several pages in analysis on. But without devoting a lot of time to that analysis many things can be overlooked or just completely missed. Also you have to take into account the thinking abilities of your average student. Some of the animes are so complex (FLCL) that many scholars might even miss their message. Your basic public school student would probably watch an anime like they watch movies now, with mild disinterest (the world isn't full of otaku's...), and even those who watched it astutely have a good chance of missing the point without having it handed to them by the instructor.

Another thing is the schools would have to use licensed versions of anime and probably have to show it in the dubbed form. Professional subs often don't stand up fansubs in the way that they interpret every word while fansubbers will have some words in romanji with a TL note. I'm sure most of you also hate dubs, but I'm also sure that many teachers unfamiliar with the differences will have no problem showing animes in English if only for their benefit of not having to pay attention to know where the story is at. I'm taking "Modern Japanese Literature and Film in Translation" at my university and am lucky enough to have a professor who knows what she's doing and is able to clearly present all the information and give us enough hints to figure things out on our own. But I would hazard to say that you wouldn’t find many people out there who have her level of devotion to Japan to be able to present animes in a way that would be even remotely considered educational.

So while I'm not against animes being shown in schools I just think that it's not going to happen anytime soon. The anime fan numbers have been rising in recent years but they just aren't at a level to be very influential. Anime is still seen as more cult type thing. Which is to say that most people only know about anime through the local eccentric, and usually overly hyper, otaku. While there are normal people out there who enjoy anime, due to the social stigma placed on the whole genre by the extreme otaku most people avoid anime/anime fans like the plague. This will hopefully change one day, but until then you won't find anime in school.

Well my school required students to bring laptops to school. Instead of only using it for education, most students (mainly my friends) use it to watch movie and (of course) anime. So, mainly, they allow students to watch anime in school, (some went as far as in class after handing a test in)
