heck no,
i think manga should diversify, as long as it keeps the same feel of authentisity. If it took place in america cool, if it took place in russia cool. i read manga for the story and charcter plot. I enjoy the cultural background of japan the most, but i wouldn't stop reading it if it changed scenes. |

Hahaha...yeah, I think that the point......we all said they take place either in Japan, USA or a fantasy world......so far.....you'v only just proved to us that they dont take place in any other country.....
....although, I think there have been a few that took place in China..... |

| It is always amusing to see mangakas illustrate stories that happen in real life but in somewhere that is outside the Asian continent, it allows the reader, if he isn't Japanese, to understand the writer's perspective of a country he has never been to. For example, if a New Yorker read a manga where the main story is in his hometown, he could read the story and say to himself 'hey, that is SO not true, we don't do that over here' or 'it seems that whoever wrote this stuff knows what he's talking about'. |

| as others have said any place is fine as long as the story is interesting or fits in to the plot well. however i still do prefer the setting to be in japan. |

You haven't read Jojo's Bizarre Adventure! Well, at least the 3rd generation is really worth looking into, taking place across continents and over the ocean.
And Berserk doesn't even seem to be taking place on Earth. |

Yeah, I agree.....like in Yakatate Japan!, when they portrayed the english as war loving, UN hating, identical looking weiredos.....it got me thinking "WTF?"......even more so when the american guy said that the UK was useless without the Americans....that actualy ot me a little mad...
sorry I went a little off-topic....but it goes to show, that Japan is still pretty much xenophibic/conservative...and many rely on stereotype and basics to describe foreigners.....basicly...I dont think many manga-ka could actualy accuratly draw a story that happenes in another country.....just as I doubt anybody else could if they havnt gone to that country... |

yeah i would read a manga even not from or happening in Japan as long as the quality stays the same (or better) _________________ manga? anime?? thats for losers
>_>
<_<
>_>
btw i really recommend Ubel Blatt, awesome manga (the theme is old but the story is good, also has ecchi content)
and in terms of anime you're really missing out if you haven't seen Xam'd |

I recommend both Priest and Island. Priest takes place mainly in Old West America, and Island takes place in Korea. Both are from Korean authors, and especially Priest is worth a look. Heavy stuff, though; lots of blood and death in both of them. _________________ Sweep the leg, Johnny! |

| How do you propose the mangaka would gain enough insight about the place to not have it take place in Japan? Imagine an X-men in Japan... the culture is totally out of context, and the author would have no idea how to even draw a typical street. Just as people vary in place, the places and setting themselves vary. Even small mess-up would very quickly catch the eyes of locals--imagine drawing a totally wrong type of tree, or having Tokyo full of Dodge Vipers and big pick-ups. No--that's just wrong, see? |
