because people like you say they read less manga than boys do...that's why they do..
no--literally, that's how it works. It's strange for girls to be introduced to manga because it's "a guy's thing".
PS. there are a lot of shounen and shoujo manga out there--roughly equal in number..just not in the US. |

That's partially true.
When people have preconception about what someone can do or not do, they tend to try and prove that preconception.
When students are told that male students do better in math than female students, female students tend to perform worse in math tests. When they were told that male and female students do equally well in math, the scores reflect that comment. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

Really? Usually when I to to a book store, the majority of people looking at the manga section are male. I tend to notice that when I'm the only female at the time looking at the manga too...haha. It could also be because in the book stores I've been to they tend to have a lot more shounen manga compared to shoujo ones. There has only been one store that I've seen that attracts a lot of females to the manga section, and that was because they have a large collection of shoujo manga on display compared to shounen ones. I don't know...maybe it's just the area I live in?

| Same here.....well....except in comic book stores.....most girls dont dare venture there as much as boys.....and thats one of the reasons......ppl still link comics to either for boys, kids, or geeks.......sad realy.... |
It is sad....
And also brings another point to why some girls (or just people in general) may not read manga. How so? Another scenerio with me in it (why does all this seem to happen to me..) where I'm reading a manga and an acquaintance of mines comes up to me and asks "You still read comic books?" And that right there could be a reason why some people don't read manga....because it could be considered to be a "kid thing".... |

In Japan or other east asian countries, adults reading manga is as common as people reading a novel or newspaper.
It's just that over here, manga is still just a niche market. Although it's come a long way since few years ago. The manga section used to be in some obscure corner of a book store or comic book store, but now they proudly populate large book shelves in stores. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

Where I live I usally see more girls at the manga section of book stores than boys. Though I have never seen any adults reading an manga before. Where i live it's really not common. There's shonen jump and shounen jump advanced for boys and there is shojo and I'm pretty shure two others for girls the names slip me at the time. |

has there ever been a world wide poll that could actually prove that? I myself love manga (and yes I am obviously a girl) and I don't see how there could ever be concrete-iron-clad proof that boys read more manga than girls. Gah who cares anyway as long as there is manga in the world ^_^? _________________ He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster....

Have you guys actually seen book shelves full of manga in a book store? I see about 50:50 ratio of shoujo and shounen manga in book stores. Of course the popular and well known ones are usually shounen, so they'll be easiest to spot, but there are lot of shoujo manga too. Also if you go to a comic book store, there are lot more selection of seinen manga. What you see in a regular book stores would usually be no more than rated teen manga. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

| Well even if a manga is entended for boys or girls they can appeal to either or depending on the reader. I myself read a few mangas that were made for girls. Like Hana-kimi and I'm pretty sure Suzuka a girls manga but I like both of htese mangas there really good I would avice anyone to start reading them if you haven't already. |

what's that based on? Of all the fans I know, the overwhelming majority are female and they all read manga. The view male fans I know all prefer anime. _________________

| Well just go to borders or any other book store. They have lots of mangas most have been intend for boys. But more and more mangas that appeal to girls are coming out. But most mangas can appeal to girls or boys. I like that about mangas. As longas a manga has a good story most will read it. So it doen't all ways matter if it's a girls or boys manga. |
