Back in like December 2005, Newtype USA asked readers what things they did to prove their otaku-devotion. My examples were that I was trying to learn to speak japanese to watch and understand raw subs and that I was going to give my first-born child a japanese name (despite being of European-American descent). My letter was good enough to be published in the March 2006 issue. Now the point of this thread... would anyone else here consider a japanese name for their child(ren) and if so, what names?

I want to name my daughter Kirika, though my girlfriend (french-italian-american-bred girl) isn't too keen on the idea (though her suggestions totally suck, IMO). Although, she said she would consider the name Nami, so I would consider Namiko only because I like multi-syllabic names.

if by some stoke of luck i actually get a job and residency in japan, then i would give my daugther and/or son a jap name. and maybe an english name as well.

since im chinese-vietnamese-australian, i think a good name is karin, kairi, himiko or miina for a daughter.
for a boy, i guess a name like ken, yuen or nagi sounds good.

nami sounds like a good name.

id prefer names that appear in both languages, that way children wont tease their names when they come to a non-japanese country. ^.^

hmm wait a sec got to handle a spider first...
okay back. i wonder if it survived the fall off the balcony. probably

nah unless the mother was japanese i would never. im not japanese. i consider myself Australian first and Chinese a very very close second.
If i had to come up with a name that reflected the things which gave me most pleasure it might be 'Cake', or 'Cheese' or even better...'Cheesecake'! Razz Scrum-diddily-umptious

Well.....I might give my pet a Japanese name.....but not child....

Unless of course the mother was of Japanese decent and didnt mind......or if I lived in Jp and braught him/her/them up there.....but otherwise.....no, I'd actualy think it to be an insult to name a child somthing from a language/nationality/culture I know nothing about....

plus.....imagin a what other ppl/kids would think......the child would surely get bullied....

Good names tho.....well....I dunno....names in Jp have a meaning and are usualy thought of more than ones in the West (honistly, most parents have no idea what their kids names actualy mean most the time).......so naming a child all willy nilly is a no no......

Yeah, it's a stupid idea to give a non-japanese kid a japanese name. For the sake of your child's life, don't do it, unless you are raising him or her in Japan.

My wife and I intend to name our first born (should we be lucky enough to get a girl) Sora... yes, it's a japanese name, but it's just pretty overall and works quite well.

Well, both of my sons have japanesse middle names, Yoshiki and Asuka. They are half black and half japanesse. I and my wife felt it would be best to remind them of there culture.

In my defense, all names have culture/area-specific origins. I mean, what is an "American" name? My name is english, my girlfriend's name is french, but we're both from the US. Yeah, you could argue that we're of european decent (which we are), but it's not like I "celebrate" my heritage or anything.

To me, a name is a name, doesn't matter where it comes from. I've seen some pretty wild names out there (not even considering the monstrosities some Hollywood celebrities choose), so I think it wouldn't be totally outrageous to pick something from another part of the world. Besides, Kirika is two steps away from Erika.

I still don't think it'd be good idea to name a European decent child with Japanese name. I just don't think kids around her would ignore the peculiar name.

Well it does depend on the name...I guess out there....there are some Jp names that would fit in the West.......but its just so different.....I mean think about......a lot of the names sound different in Japanese......like the "r" is prenounced differently.......it just wouldnt work....

Honistly.....it would be like me naming my kid a Chinese name although I'm 100% white European/S. African.......that would be odd!!!!

I have the same opinion as Bowser , maybe my pet but not my child.
It may sound cool thought .. to have a japanese name.
Even thought there's alot of japanese influence in me, i still dont think its enought to push me to give my kid a jap name . Maybe if only i have japanese blood or decent but other than that nop ><

Uhh, I dont wanna be like my grandparents. My dad's name is Kazou Kiyuri Vlantieux. He is pure Filipino, but he do have like 1/256 Japanese blood, but thats way way way back. He has NEVER been to Japan. I will give my child/ren Japanese names when I marry a Japanese man and raise our child/ren in Japan since people get critisized too much because of their names, I expirienced that, my middle name is Kaoru...And people think I'm half Japanese since people usually call me Kaoru.

if ever i have a child whether it be boy or girl (though im hoping for a boy) uhh maybe not.. unless the mother is of japanese origins or if we were to live in japan or at least raise our child there... which by now is still very much unlikely... like bowser stated.. it would be better suited to name my pet of a japanese kind... and i have my own plans anyway on naming my child.. Razz

Well, my cousin's wife just gave birth. None of them have any Japanese origins as I can think of, since my cousin is 100% Chinese, and his wife is 50% Welsch and 50% Chinese. None of them watch anime, or read manga, not even listen to Japanese music and so on. One wierd thing, they gave their daughter's name Mika Kaoru. (her full name is Mika Kaoru Tyner Lau] And yes, eeveryone were shocked when my niece is 3/4 chinese and 1/4 welsch and have a japanese name...
