Good in what sense? Actually, the main idea, and the story as a whole is pretty good.

However, it is pretty dated, which you'll notice in the animation quality and everything.

It's still a classic story, though rather long (I forget how many episodes, I think over 50). In my opinion the music, and idol music (from the 1st female lead, Minmei) is classic stuff.

That action is pretty good too, as far as old-fashioned battle scenes go.

However, there are some slow times in the anime, and some parts are frustrating with how the characters turn out ~ but overall, it's touching to see how they grow and rank advance.

The last arc of series slowed down a lot for me, but either way, you should still give Macross a shot.

This type of storyline is pretty advanced, even by today's standards.

Macross? IS it good? IT's GREAT!
I've been a fan of the original Macross since I first saw it when i was about 8.

yeah...the animation is pretty dated though but that doesn't bother me since it's a pure classic for me. Story is pretty ineresting too and the additoon of the veritech fighters. A very souped up F-14 that can transform.

I think theres alot of people who would agree that Macross was the first to revolutionize the Japnime world as well as the start point for the love of it. When Macross: DYRL came out in 1985 was it, it clearly showed how advanced it was in terms of animation and storyline. The debut of Lynn Minmei also dawned the beginning of anime idols.

From what ive read and researched, the creator of Macross; Shoji Kawamori; never likes to incorporate the same characters from one project to another with the exceptions of Macross 7 and Macross Zero.

Chronologically it goes: (this does not include the harmony gold versions of the U.S. released series called Robotech. This series was compiled together with a sightly different story line than from the original japanese version)

Macross Zero

Macross the TV series

Macross Plus

Macross 7

Of course in order to understand what Macross Zero is about you would need to watch the other 3 first, especially the dull Macross 7 TV series.

Another movie/ova series called Macross 2 is to be considered a parallel world because it was not produced by the original creators.

Macross: Do you Remember Love? was released after the TV series became so popular in Japan. It has the same basic storyline of Humans against the alien race Zentradi, the mystery behind Protoculture and the love triangle between Hikaru Ichijo, Misa Hayase, and Lynn Minmei. Other events in the movie are changed or moved around, but still an AWESOME movie hands down!

i read in an interview somewhere on the web (which i cant seem to find anymore, sigh) that it was up to the viewer to decide whether to use the tv series or the movie for the correct chronological order. he said something like a story can be told from more than one perspective.

I agree, macross is really good. Eventhough its an 80's anime it still has power here today. I know we've all grown up with our childhood anime. Samurai pizza cats, rouin warriors, robotech to name a few, but rewatching it when we're grown up doesnt have the same effect right? When i watched macross in JAPANESE for the first time 10 years after i watched the crummy robotech adaption, it blew me away. As a kid i enjoyed the fight scenes. But as an adult i really appreciate the underlying message and themes of love and war. This movie is still very powerful, and the macross fan base is still going very strong. Dont believe me? check out macrossworld.com forums. And the company Yamato still releases high quality macross toys that sell quite well! I bought the Animeigo dvd set of macross and trust me, its worth every penny!
