This little screencap was taken from The Office (the american version) Season 1 episode 6. Dwight seen here is in his basketball "uniform". Fans of the show know that Dwight is a nerdy anal Jackass, and it seems that he is also an Anime Fan as well. Do the show's creators have something against anime fandom? Why the hate? Why couldn't the cool characters be closet anime fans?

JK folks, but either way it seems that us Anime folk are seen as Jackasses to The Office Creators. Why the vicious stereotype?

its just stupid....why?...becoz its the US version of the Office! Razz
British one was 100 times better!!

Anyways.......sorry bout that....as a Brit its my duty to be anti-american~jks

Well.....its just the same as any "geeky" hobby....it'll be mocked by those who arnt into it....God knows those who dont do sport mock the athleats....those who dont watch sci-fi will label other who do as "trekkies".....and those who dont listen to R&B will label those who do as Gangsters as sorts....

well basicly....its ignorance....thats what I was trying to say......pay no attention to the crappy examples...

Nerds/geeks are known as being smart arses who no one likes...outcasts...coocky basterds.....etc etc....

anime has a lot to do with escaping reality, visceral experience, transformation, the weird and the wonderful. These are things that the mainstream likes to pretend it doesnt need.
On the surface reality is supposed to seem like it is in control, in stasis and comfortable. The power of anime lies in its tendency to disregard and destroy what is ordinary and sometimes to even reconstruct the notion of ordinary altogether.

and then theres the general perception of anime. nude women, revenge of the nerds storylines, foreign culture etc.

the office is perpetuating a stereotype...but i dont know about otakus being set up as arrogant jackasses thing. i think thats too big a jump in association

Like quosimos said, it is a stereotype and nothing more. It is typically known as a geeky sort of pastime, so it makes sense that people would use it for humorous purposes. And of course anime fans are cool to each other, but can your average american joe nobody see it? Nope. Thanks to television and what they hear from their particular crowd or group.

Either way it really doesnt matter to me that otaku's are considered geeks. I know the truth, and thats all that matters to me.

Well, I dont think otakus are well recieved in any culture. Japanese themselves have many negative stereotypes about otaku even worse than here.
Basically, otaku:
-are stinky because they are too busy watching anime and playing games to wash themselves
-have no social life
-don't have girlfriends
-never exercise
-dress like dorks
-are always cynical
-are perverts
and probably many other stereotypes

But some positive stereotypes:
-good with computers and gadgets
-draw well

I guess I'll agree with these things here...since they're basically true (to me).
No GF, never exercise. Excellent

Oh I forgot to add one major stereotype; which is probably true in real life...
Lot of otaku are: Lolicon... Shocked

You know there is this anime club at my college and I went to one meeting, but good lord they all fit one sterotype on silverkitsunes list. Its scary. Except all of them had an odd odor to them. And once they saw me they like begged me to join..... I guess because Im japanese and Im not bad looking. So we have your pervert thing there.... and they were hitting on me so you have pervert AND your no girlfriend there. Most were dark and pretty depressing, so you have your cynical stereotype.... wow this is creepy. Good thing i didnt stick around lol

TrueAncestor > Hahaha, I pray to god that they don't dress up like sailor scouts and go to conventions. They even smelled weird huh? That's just sad that those stereotypes actually happens in real life. BTW where is that college?

In Texas..... Ill tell you that much. University of Texas at..... somewhere. Smile There is actually two anime clubs, but one of them is full of gaming freaks not otakus. The typical geek, good with computers, plays Dungeons and Dragons, etc. I dont really fit in there so I left.
If they did do the sailor scout thing, I would laugh me head off. Of course there were a few normal ones to be fair. But they hanged around in the back and they were outnumbered by the freaks. Shocked

Well, for the exercise part and the girlfriend, what can I say? That 2 are the only things that I can't deny. I really need the exercise though.....
