|
|
MS have been planning its handheld for a while. Seems like it just released something called like Origami or something..however I have no idea if this is its idea of "handheld gaming device" or just another tablet PC.
The origami is roughly the size of a game gear, and seems to act somewhat like a laptop/tablet pc kinda thing, with wifi support, mp3 playback, huge screen, and ipod-like interface..
Personally I think it's too big for handheld, yet doesn't seem to pack enough punch to be a laptop substitute. I think it's a bad attempt at trying to be everything, but end up being a sub-par of everything...in a very bad way. |

Microsoft's Project: Origami...
....um, I'm almost certain of one thing, that being the fact that it's not a gaming device, it doesn't look like one.
Here's an article on the Origami from Engadget.com:
Microsoft's Origami project
Thread Moved: Entertainment.
:Edit:
Actually....does this even sound like an entertainment topic? _________________

It doesn't look like gaming handheld device. It just looks like a PDA.
Handheld market isn't as easy to break into.
Nintendo has been a long time veteran of handheld market, and they still dominate it. We've seen what happened to N-gage. PSP was successful because of their brilliant marketing strategy and attractive design. Neogeo Pocket is an obscure one but still THE handheld system of choice for arcade fighting games. Wonder swan is not doing too badly, but it's not available in world market.
I don't think it'll be successful as a gaming machine, maybe as a PDA, but not as a gaming machine. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

1up.com writes on 03/09/06:
"Origami - now officially titled Ultra Mobile PCs - is essentially a shrunken, multimedia infused laptop with a touch screen. The machines come equipped with a 7-inch touch-screen displays, built-in hard drives, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth wireless, and Windows XP Tablet Edition as an operating system."
So basically, the Origa-, I mean, Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), is.. a computer. Gone handheld.
More details about the UMPC can be seen here:

Oh the sweetness!
I've been wanting to buy a ultramobile laptops for a while, and seeing how Sony's Vaio line's ultramobiles are over $3000, I wouldn't have been able to afford it. (those Vaio are damn sexay...)
I hope this is bit cheaper. I really don't care if it runs games or not. I don't want a gaming machine, I just want a very small computer. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

What I'm looking forward to:
-long battery life (I would prefer around 4~7 hours)
-weight (I'm pretty sure it will be very light compared to notebooks)
-screen quality (I always wanted a tablet PC for drawing purposes, I hope it has a good quality touch sensors)
-accessories (I want a good attachable keyboard for it, mouse won't be necessary since it's a tablet) _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

Well, what Microsoft is aiming for Origami to eventually hit is the mass market. They want it to eventually have about a days worth of battery and retail for $500. Right now the battery is not nearly that high and it retails for $1000+. I'll wait until they have it perfected By the way, the touch screen keyboard looks interesting, it is split into the bottom two corners in a fan shape so that it looks like it would be easily accessible with your thumbs. I have a PDA right now and it looks like I'll be sticking with it for at least another two years. |

They had a feature article in the Metro (that free newspaper they give to subway commuters in major cities). It looks interesting... though I'm sure you'd have to clean it a lot. _________________

I don't think Origami is a brand name or anything. Microsoft itself won't be manufacturing the device. I think it's basically going to be a generic name for Intel's UltraMobile PC. Like "PDAs" or "Tablet PCs", Origami will be the name for these Ultramobile PCs without Keyboards. Smaller than Tablet PCs, but bigger and closer to PC than PDAs, Origami will be something in between.
Here are some articles on Korean and Japanese models of Origami.

I guess we asians really do love to own things small. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |
