It's the story, and the way it plays out. The drawings and artstyle definitely help, but if you're innovative and entertaining like say, Crayon Shin-Chan, you can be successful.
But really, it comes down what story you want to tell, and how much passion you have about it~ with all the twists and such on the characters.
You'll notice, most popular characters have this thing about their personality that makes them interesting... who they are, how they relate and interact with other characters, and the progress and growth they make which are necessary to reach their goals and dreams.
Manga and Anime can pretty much cover any topic. ANY. It's not too different from a TV show or a Movie. It's mostly about the characters and the mythology around the backdrop that you can create. |

The characters and the story of course, those are the most important aspects, both need to devleop and be powerful in one way or another to make people enjoy them. *Example: That one with that boxing kid...forgot the name, speaking of that, why do people like that one so much?* Another way is to be more unqie about it, and do something no one has done before, bu you gotta do it well, like *and I'm not sure on this* Azumanga Daioh was pretty unqie (Only one of it's kind I've seen)
The drawing style is another big plus, it needs to look cool and stylish, but sometimes an animes appeal is in how different the style is, sometimes you need a drawing style that defines your manga/anime. The style is the additude. _________________ Everybody fire at Will! *gun sounds* Now that Will is dead, kill the bagel!

Good character design!!! And they must have interesting personalities. They have to be likeable, real, and contribute to the story (or be actively supportive to the main character). As long as you have those elements, any series can succeed. Well, in my opinion at least. _________________

Not always, look at Hellsing! It's decent, but not awe-inspiring, and the mangaka even mentioned in one of his volumes that he was worried that his work wasn't clean enough.
His story probably made up for the lack of character design. Pretty much what everyone else already said. _________________ Life is an opportunity waiting to happen |

the characters need to be real people, with a background story, a tru personality, a motive. What do they want to do? What do they want to do with their life? How do they react to things? And your setting needs to be planned out like any other city would be...in my opinion, it just needs to seem....REAL (not the actual plot or anything, just the characters and setting, etc.) _________________ All I need to make a comedy is a park, a policeman and a pretty girl. -Charlie Chaplin

i have noticed that the ones i pick usually have a really over-powered main character with a troubelled past and some romance on the side, don't know why, i can't really relate to it in any way _________________ Mankind was blessed with curiosity and cursed with greed.

| Take this manga as an example Ichigo 100%. It clearly states the all category of a good manga. If you can make something like that or better... |

| I don't profess to be an expert, but I know what I like. Characters and storyline are foremost. The art style, though important, is not the main concern. Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble both are actually simplistic artistically, but they are widely popular because each character is unique and fully formed. Both occur in a high school environment, and address high school matters like homework, teachers, crushes and lunch. Nothing fancy, just good writing. |

my opinion, the story must rock n original other wise i will just close the manga and go sleep...another thing is good drawing or maybe funny characters type like One Piece...most of the mangaka do any research on the manga before drawing...for example Hikaru no Go, the mangaka has a 5-dan player to supervise the manga
all the best becoming the great mangaka... |

for me the factors that make manga really nice is the drawing and the story _________________ ut quod es meus bona es totus tamen vomica |
