Now days, otaku isn't so badly concieved of in Japan. Ever since Densha Otoko, the otaku culture is out in full force.

For the uninitiated, people wouldn't know the proper term which otaku's refer themselves as. So it's only natural people would use unelegant terms such as "anime freak"... 
You say he has Gundam Action figures? "Action figure" is such a vague word for such complex hobby. When you think of Gundam, most often, people think of Plastic Models. The plastic models (gunpla) are not action figures and depending on the type, it could take almost a month to put one together. They can be very expansive too.
I don't really know what you mean by "action figures", but if it's gunpla, he can not possibly complete the collection since Bandai releases new models every year whether its from old Gundam series or new ones. They'll probably continue to release Gundam Seed gunpla even long after the series ends.
