When I initially became an anime devotee, nearly every series I viewed would consume my mind for a time in one way or another. I still have piles of merchandise from my infatuation with shows such as DBZ, Inuyasha, and Kenshin. As time passed, though, I naturally became more selective. Cowboy Bebop, Lain, Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, Escaflowne, and Haibane Renmei are some examples. Typically an anime that exhibits some profundity or contains introspective characters easily occupies my mind. I recall spending hours at a time researching interpretations of Paranoia Agent.

I just realized that i'm starting to be a devotee for anime.. it actually started with gundam series then it expanded and my hobby became a passion. Later i started researching another anime like kenshin, inuyasha, and most of all seed. Although they were good evanglion was by far my favortie. Hopefull this thread will ignite a stronger passion for me LOL =)

My obsession with anime has long started a few years back then, thanx to Rurouni Kenshin, the 1st anime that I really got into and other than that my current obsession is Claymore (still watching) it's just so diffrent than your typical anime since the anime is somewhat brutal and the main character Claire is beautiful Embarassed and so the rest of her comrade Embarassed Embarassed

silverkitsune... Let me begin by saying that FLCL is a work of genius. Just look at who the lead writer was... the same lead writer for Neon Genesis Evangelion. The animes you described in you initial post are the types of animes that are behind my love for anime in the first place. Thought provoking, "mind f@#k" anime is what I like to call it. Some may disagree with me, but in reguards to shows like that there's usually a deeper meaning behind what is initially being conveyed to the viewer. I.e. FLCL's deeper meaning revolved around the philosophies of egoism and individuality, S.E. Lain's deeper meaning's revolved around being able to define personal existance, Neon Genesis Evangelion's underlying story was a mix of different philosophies, one being individuality/egoism and the philosophy that existance is the conscience (spelling?) or dream of one entity (in this case Ikari Shinji). That same philosophy is found in the newer series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

You can find "deeper meaning" in alot of anime, and what I'm beginning to realize is that alot of them involve philosophies reguarding egoism, just read the translations to alot of the songs. In FLCL, The Pillows were responsible for pretty much all of the music, just read the translations of the lyric's and try to tell me that they aren't speaking about self-reliance and the independent metality. Heres some other titles that I've found sub-plots and underlying messages in:
Great Teacher Onizuka, FLCL, Serial Experiments: Lain, Excel Saga, Evangelion, Eureka Seven, The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Air TV, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Akira, Elfen Lied, Smurai Champloo, Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou, and Ergo Proxy.

The thing that grasps the viewer the way you are describing is that, most of the time, these sub-plots aren't directly conveyed. The show requires the viewer to be involved mentaly to fully understand whats tryind to be conveyed. Sometimes (in my case, with FLCL) the sub-plot is so subtle and vague that its almost non-existant and requires you to watch the series again. Why? Why not just give up and watch something else? I say that it depends on whose watching, but it's because we know that theres more to what we are seeing and it gives us an 'itch' that we must 'scratch'.

Thank you for posting this topic I think it will provoke alot of thought for some of the more seasoned anime fans. I've tried to post topics similar to this one but I think the fact that I'm a noob to this site kept people from replying.

there are only two that come into mind when i think of obsession..

1. evangelion.

the imagery, the plot, the good quality of animation and also SUPER COOL MECHAS pulled me in. a while ago i went into a relapse and started looking up all the imagery and started watching all the episodes again.

2. love hina

this was the first manga i read that was in this genre (harem echhi comedic romance) i was hooked and had to read the whole series in one go. this manga really jump started my otaku nature. i was so enthralled by the pictures and the story-line with its wackiness also pulled me into obsession

Well, won't really say total obsession, coz obsession sems too strong a word to use, but yeah, every now and then, there'll be series here and there that are just too epic to let go and have to watch on.

The first one's probably evangelion - that was what really started me into anime. The more recent ones will be code geass and haruhi

This has happened to me too. Every once in a while will come along a particular anime that I will be so hooked on and so obsessed with, that it's stuck inside my brain for months. I look for stuff related to it, AMVs, merchandise, fan art, the works. I know the feeling.

FYI I consiter myself a bit above an "american fanboy," when it comes to anime since I watch the fansubs. I cant stant the absoluely horrible american dubed voices. Several friends of mine watch them and when ever thy start talking about how great their dubbed versions of some anime are I wana punch them int he face. Dubed anime = makes me want to hurt someone. But, I have never really been obbsesed with any one anime, but manga on the other hand... I once read the same mana series for 36 strait hours, lol didnt drink or eat anything. It was a 385 chaper manga. with an avrage of ~60 pages per chapter, 385 * ~60 = ~23100 pages of manga read in one sitting give or take a few hundred pages...

I pretty much get obsessed with an good anime that I watch straight. I don't get obsessed with animes that I watch weekly, I don't know, I get a different feeling when I watch a whole series in 1 go, it kinda leaves an after shock. The latest one that I got obsessed with was TTGL, I watched it in one sitting so, when it ended I was really craving for more.

Hmmm...
My choice would be MONSTER, Code Geass I&II, and Gurren Laggan.
I'm not obsessed with it, it just kind of give me the thought "what if that was me? what would i do?" and i found it to be hard especially when it comes to self sacrifices. Cool
