I find this is a recurring theme that i find while watching anime. Seeing as Fullmetal Alchemist ended on Adult Swim recently, i noticed that the ending was completely emo sad. The same has been with other shows i've watched such as Betterman, Cowboy Bebop, and FLCL.
It might just be me, but is it so wrong to put a happy ending where nobody dies, the hero gets the girl, and no-one ends up miserable?
Discuss this malarky.

I've seen plenty of anime that had happy endings. Maybe you've just happen to watch anime with bad endings only.

ive seen my share of happy ending animes... maybe because the recently good animes on now like the ones you mentioned have coincidentally emo sad endings... sad endings i think tend to add more drama into a show... and ups their coolness... but they have to have a solid base storyline and not just depend on the ending...

Wait o' my brothers, theres a continuation to the Alchemist series? well then.... theres still too many sad endings out there. Is the entire anime fanbase in japan emo? or are they just trying to turn all people watching their shows into chronically depressed angsty teens?

FLCL's ending wasn't sad but nostolgic.

Personally, I prefer endings were the hero leaves/retires/dies because they've run their course. They were supposed to be a hero, they were heroic, and once there is no longer anything else for them to do, they're supposed to move on. More of an Eastern thing than a Western thing, so we're used to our happy endings...

maybe because people usually anticipate a good ending at the end of an anime/movie that some people may be bored with it(like me) so most of the story maker place a bit of tragical ending to make things balance and since maybe before that person watch too much happy ending he/she will feel the movie/anime is good

but usually i don't really watch anime with sad ending for several times in a row

Naturally, anyone would feel better after watching a series with a happy ending. But, sometimes a tragic ending can leave a stronger impact on viewer's impression. Tragic endings generally have more lasting impression afterwards.
If every series ended with happy endings, everything would be too predictable.

still, how would you like it if at the end of senior year in high school, you and everyone you ever loved ended up hating each other? The dude (or girl as it may be) you've been dating ends up going out with the annoying chick from his math class, and you end up never seeing each other again until 5 or so years later only with thoughts of what could have been lingering between you, that is crap
