Well it depends on what you want to see after all...In big shows (26+eps)..the viewer more or less gets attached and accustomed with the characters...so a sad ending will always cause him sorrow and maybe spoil his mood...BUT!...personally I value a lot more the ending that will touch me the most (or make me learn sth)...happy endings (many times) don't do this to me...they are just...happy... Rolling Eyes
The ideal happy ending for me is the ending of NTHT (Ima Sokoni Iru Boku)...If you've seen it you'll know what I mean... Wink
Anyway, I think that endings must cause a BAMMM to the viewer...I'm from Greece and we use the ending mode of "katharsis" 2500 years now...this literally means that the viewer many times must suffer together with the character in order to reach the state of understanding the creator's message for the movie...If anyone has seen ancient greek tragedy, he will understand what I mean... Wink

Suffering with characters causes attachment, but I believe he was referring to an ending that had suffering.

Any ending can be interpreted anyway, including making it a happy ending. Try me if you don't believe me, though I would have had to watch the media.

And NTHT is awesome.

I myself can't watch sad endings due to the fact that reminds me of all the misery in my life. Razz
My whole life is a sad ending, so if I watch one it gets more personal...
Though I can agree with what you all, that sad endings are needed to make the happy ones happy.
If I would've watched only animés with a happy endning I for sure wouldn't have gotten tired though, since I cry at happy endings. Razz
Although I tend to get pissed off after watching a sad ending I rather prefer animés with no ending at all like Ichigo 100%.
Well, Sad endings or happy endings, both are kinda predictable and I prefer animés that really builds it up for a perfect happy ending... But then again, no ending will be happy if there is no misery.

Sincerily Yours,
Zadian

A great quote...:"without sadness...when would you know when your happy?"..

That was random...but I'm pretty sure it could be applied to somthing in this discussion..

I dont know if I would say I enjoy a sad ending.....but rather..a tragic one....this dosnt always meen sad thought...
Kannazuki no Miko pretty much had a very tragic conclusion...but in the end....it could still be interpretd as happy...

plus..we may watch anime to escape reality...but deep down..we also want to be able to relate to it...and no one ever has a perfect happy life....and many have sad lives...and having characters and story conclusions that can relate as such is sometimes a good idea....
plus who wants to watch anime if we know that everysingle ending is gonna be happy happy~

Not all anime have bad endings, thou there are alot of them I must say. I just finished watching Burst Angel and the ending could have been better. With Meg trying to be Jo, I mean come on she was the weakest character in the show.

"without sadness...when would you know when your happy?"

We woudln't know. And we would never need to know or hunger to know, because we would in fact always be happy would we not?

... Or something like that.

Anyway, most people in the world prefer sad endings. Humans have this thing about being happy, or seeing happy things and getting bored with them. That's because some people seem to crave misfortune, chaos, and sadness. "I'm not happy, so why should you be happy" type attitudes and such.

You can't deny it. Tragic endings can make for good endings. Although they aren't happy, they would be good. Now, the problem is that some shows try to bring about unpleasant endings on purpose.

What I mean is this... With shows like Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Beebop... You can predict endings that people would see as sad. I don't think either were happy endings, but they did make sense considering everything you've seen up til then. The circumstances, the characters involved, it makes sense.

Shuffles ending, or at least the parts leading up to the end, seemed to come out of nowhere. I liked the show, and liked the ending nonetheless, but man did some of that stuff come from out of left feild. There are alot of good happy endings out there, and there's alot of bad ones. The same goes for sad endings. It's all in what you make of it in the end.

The animes that ive seen is happy, sad and funny but most of the anime's ending is very horrible because they just ended too fast or either they just had enough of it.
