Looks like it's finally confirmed. PS3 is offially region free!
This will be quite a good news for importing stores everywhere around the world, especially European countries who often get later releases than US. Also offering free online multiplay.

| But then again, most of the money that they're gunna reel in through online gaming on the PS3 will the a marketplace similar to the xbox 360 |

OMG OMG OMG!
PS3 is REGION FREE?!?
OH YES! That is a great Improvement made by SONY! Definitely the BEST feature that I'm sticking to buying the PS3!
I guess SONY Noticed that since the PSP games were region free(well...some of them^^)...the sales went up!
This indeed the Greatest improvement that will make SONY's PS3 to reach the Top! ...

Though it's not clear yet whether the PS1 and PS2 games will work on PS3 as region free. This is probably the best news for the importing stores, their business will pick up even more.

btw...wasn't SONY's Online Multiplayer mode free in the first place compared to Xbox LIVE?
The great thing about SONY is that they don't charge us gamers for playing games online if the game supports online play, which is a great thing. We just need an internet connection to be able to play unlike Xbox which needs Subscription...

Its good.... the PS3 is going to be Region free, and also free multy-play, but as online PC games the server its going to have a fee(sp?), it would be a devastating move against the XBOX if Sony makes a online game free, it would have to be a great game but Sony have made it before, and if they cant, the Region free its going to be good enough.

| I would be worried about the overall format of the PS3's online play. Microsoft put together a wonderful system for their XBOX-live, but considering that Sony is going with free online play, the overall quality of their online system may suffer. |

Yes, it will be backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, so if you got all those favourite PS1/PS2 games, do not sell them away yet =)

Actually that wasn't my question. I know it's backward compatible, but I'm wondering if those PS1/PS2 games will have region lock on them on PS3.

I dont believe that PSX games will be a problem since region its just for some formats and for the PS2, maybe some problems with the PAL or NTSC(sp?) compatibility(sp?).

I don't think so. It is stupid of Sony to lock the region for PS2 games when the PS3 games is not, right? If they are really that stupid, then I don't know what to say then =P

Part of the problem with Regions is that different countries use different encoding system for TV. Most of Europe uses PAL system so DVDs and games are not compatible with NTSC encoding. I'm pretty sure they'll make the PS3's bluray games as compatible for both, but not sure about PS2.

That is fantastically wonderful news silverkitsune. I am exstatic about this. Now I just have to get some fast internet and I am set to kick some arse online. 
I really dont care too much about the region lock so I have not comment on that really. As long as its regioin free for PS3 its all good.
