I suddenly can't access my HD and the FAT32 file system on it suddenly became a RAW File System....
and the remaining space that I had in it was gone...
and this is kinda the worst of ALL...it says my HD needs reformatting...T_T
What could have done this?!
the FAT32...changed to an NTFS
does this mean my HD is....done for?!
I also keep getting this "Cyclic Redundancy errors"...
but in the end....I end up getting to reformat it all...ALL my files...GONE...T_T _________________

Ouch >.<''
I feel for your HDD, Raiden. BTW, how old is your harddrive? Could be that your HDD is dying if it kept on becoming RAW for nothing. Try NTFS and see how well it can hold up. If this still happens, then you may want to consider a new HDD on the budget list next month _________________

My HDD is just a year old....or less. And it's an External HDD. I bought it separately from the PC itself.
I almost got crazy when it happened this morning...140GB wos file was gone from meT_T.Now I have to start all over again from scratch...and hope that I run into those files again on the net...
also the weird thing...when it happened, my PC has gone slower.
and it makes a lot of noise.
I just wished I burned those files before I lost them....now I have to RE-download all those torrents again...
btw Jsy3k...what does RAW mean? _________________

Well, like the word means literally. It is raw, that means it is not formatted, that is all. _________________

yeah, sorry feel for you too
but your only option to get it working again is to format it
NTFS would be a generally good format to use
the good thing is that 99% of all files are replaceable,
sucks to have to get them again, but it happens sometimes _________________ [img:500:184:c0d8dc4eaa]http://kontek.net/LizardDude/ManagerSig20bacon.jpg[/img:c0d8dc4eaa] |

ahhh....It's making those weird noises again!
I guess I really have to buy a new HDD as soon as possible.
i just hope it doesn't die until I burn the files that are on it.
but this is what I noticed....
it seems that I only have this problems when accessing picture files but the videos and musics are fine. _________________

its a maxtor, and they have a 1year factory warantee, so hopefully i'll be able to get it sent in and replaced after i recover as many files from it as possible _________________ [img:500:184:c0d8dc4eaa]http://kontek.net/LizardDude/ManagerSig20bacon.jpg[/img:c0d8dc4eaa] |

-defragmentation
-change EIDE cable if it's using ribbon
-always leave 20% free of space
-have the hard drive lay flat horizontally instead of standing in a vertical position
-make sure the power supply is giving enough power to the hard drive. 400W PSU is recommended. |

Maybe and yes i said Maybe, its because you dont disconnect it before you off its power. My 1st hard drive KOed and i think its due to that. I have asked this question before and the response was that it was critcal to safely remove the hardware by right clicking it on the system tray. _________________

well, i never got the drive full, and i don't delete anything from it, (anime archive drive), it tends not to get fragmented
ribbon is just fine
550 watt power supply
drive has always been mounted in its bracket in a horizontal position
sometimes its not always user error
talked with a tech and he said it probably had a misaligned read/write pin
so Maxtor is picking up the bill on this one
apparently this is a fairly common problem, and is even more common in Western Digitals, i've never owned a Western Digital, the tech that i was talking to just said that it happens on both a fair amount.
Seagate looks to be a brand that doesn't have many issues,
***take note all of you future HDD purchasers***
Maxtor and WD would proby be fine for just extra storage, but i won't be trusting my system partition to them anymore
**edit** sorry on the double post guys, dunno what happened, i fail, will someone delete it for me pls. _________________ [img:500:184:c0d8dc4eaa]http://kontek.net/LizardDude/ManagerSig20bacon.jpg[/img:c0d8dc4eaa]

| lol, double posts. anyway, if it's in windows filesytem (fat, fat32, ntfs, etc.), your anime archive drive will be defragmented, no matter what. even if you don't care whether if it's defragmented or not, since they're just videos to you, you may think again for windows will put a file at the very end of your hard drive plate even if you have a bunch of space left, which would most likely cause the needle to make damage as it reaches towards the end of the plate. well, good thing maxtor is really nice. |

no i was just saying, that until you delete and move lots of files around, the data stays fairly unfragmented
i never did any moving or deleting, so its fragmentation level would be very low
The new seagate i bought has an even longer manufacturer warranty, so i'm not going to say Maxtor is nice _________________ [img:500:184:c0d8dc4eaa]http://kontek.net/LizardDude/ManagerSig20bacon.jpg[/img:c0d8dc4eaa] |

ok...I just bought me another HDD from Seagate and this time It's laying flat on the ground not vertically anymore.
now...What am I supposed to do with my "OLD" HDD? I'm actually planning to open it up and see what's inside of it...or maybe I should do something else to it?
What are your suggestions for the 'ol HDD's fate? _________________

to me, opening it up just for fun would be the very last thing i wanna do to a hard drive. if the hard drive's still got some chances, i could use it as a media server (though, the computer will have to be on all the time to retain its files and filesystem format). I could also use it as a cache drive so all the temporary internet stuff will go to that drive and i wont' have to defrag my system every so often. it'll be really nice if i could use it for my other computer which is on 24/7 and restarts around once a month. I could use it to do miscellaneous stuff running OSes on CD-ROM. i could also use it as a backup drive if i'm gonna try to back up stuff from the computers i'm gonna fix. it'll be a waste if the hard drive that has some chances of doing something gets to be unfunctional at all from being dismantled. store it some place just in case you could use it later or give it to someone that might have use for it. the best solution is to give the hard drive away to me . |
