I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before, but just for the sake of staying fresh and inviting more people into these types of subjects, I'll offer my opinion (plus I'm bored.. I'm supposed to outside raking, haha).

Anyway, the word "cartoon" has a negative stigma to it. When you hear "cartoon," most people think Saturday morning children's programming, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and wacky nonsense. But anime, delves a little deeper than that. Series have actual stories (probably 90% of them are linear, to-be-continuted type stories, like a soap opera or a 13-hour long movie). A lot of the anime I watch is really dramatic, too. Shows like Air, Mai-HiME, hell even Mahoraba (and I'm only up to episode 12) have incredible elements to them. I can't say the Simpsons or Futurama ever invoked emotion like that from me, let alone anyone.

I suppose a more accurate descriptor would be anime is "animated," as in it's hand-drawn (or computer graphically-drawn these days). But to me, that's more of the appeal. Countless times I just stare in amazement at how beautiful the scenery is. If it were live-action, I'd be more like "big deal, they just picked a nice place to film it."

I think for a time Disney was getting away from the "cartoon" stigma as well. Well, at least their movies were. Many of their major features between the 1950s and 1990s were full of drama, but they had their cartoony elements as well (talking animals, for one). People just need to understand that just because a series is spawned from the ink of a pen that that doesn't necessarily mean characters are going to be running around in loopy circles hitting eachother with ACME mallets. The only people who call them "cartoons" are the same people who think anime is either "sex" or "pokemon".... and those are the people who've never bothered to watch a single episode of anime.

well.....xenocrisis0153 said just about everything that needed to be said....

Yes....they are cartoons.....but that has a negative attachement to it....even I dont like calling anime cartoons......its just easier to differentiate....way I see it....in the West......its more of a genre of animation, rather than it just being from Japan....

this thread reminds me of the "Marines are not soldiers!!!" thread in the imdb Jarhead forum. Its what it is whatever you call it.
the problem is that some people have narrow minded ideas about what cartoons are supposed to be. You dont have to watch anime to understand. I mean, a mediocre episode of The Simpsons beats most of the non-animated crap on the tele.

by literal translation yes it is

but to me anime is its own entity and different in its own ways, i cant look at Bleach or Ichigo 100% or Gundam SEED or NGE the same way i look at anything made here (even if its made to resemble anime)

i rather call anime as anime and cartoons as cartoon but anime is, after all, linked to cartoons so i suppose that anime are cartoons.

to some people, ( including me ) if someone says "cartoon", i will mostly think of kids programmes, undetailed animated shows. kids watch alot of cartoons so whenever i watch cartoons, i feel like... i'm a little kid, not yet matured.

I think the anime and cartoon are not the smae things at all.Because cartoon is something for children to make fun or to learn what's right or wrong. But anime is a colorful world with many kind of emotion:Happy, sad, dissapointed, angry, funny and romantic. It reflect the true qorld in imaginary way.Maybe some time we can see ourselves in a character in anime. I don't think cartoons and anime are the same they are both cartoons, but only if you define them as well color moving pictures like as anime stands for animation. Cartoons are stereotyped as Saturday morning where little kids watch bugs bunny early in the morning, but how many of you still now a channel that shows bugs bunny early in the morning. Mostly they are like yu-gi-oh, pokemon, ninja turtles, and other stuff. Cartoons are from the USA as far as I know I might be wrong though and anime comes from Japan. In anime I see more diversity in anime not just omedy, but all kinds. Manly "cartoons" are comedy not all, but most. Well that's is all I can think of at the moment.

mmm i have to defend the Simpsons here.
There are some truly touching moments, beyond a lot of the button pushing by the numbers sentimental stuff that you see in many mediocre anime series.

hehe but one thing which actually attracted me to anime in the first place was the melodrama Rolling Eyes im a sucker

A cartoon is a poorly drawn animation, anime is drawn with my detail and more emotion so comparing it with a cartoon would be an insult. Thats my opinion at least.

That's not necessarily true. Look at Futurama... that 3D/2D art-style rivals many anime series itself. Disney movies are also given a great deal of attention when it comes to detail too.

literally, anime, cartoon, caricatura refers to the same thing.

but the concept about we are talking when we use one of this words is very different.

for that reason cartoon and anime hasn't the same meaning.
