I thought anime used to be called japanimation because it was made in japan for japan or something like that.
but whenit got global(or at least just got the US) it was later got the call Anime =P short for animation for it is hard for the japanese tounge
cartoon is an animatioin
anime is an animation
so hence they're two differnt types of animations not types of cartoons. anime can't be "type" of cartoon for cartoon itself cannot be a "type" of cartoon
=P
but that's just my opinion ^^

Actually be definition anime is NOT a cartoon in almost all cases. If you had actually read the definition of cartoon you would know that. I say this because most people just go by what they believe the definition to be which is a series of animated pictures. Which is incorrect as the accepted definition of cartoon is as follows
[Taken from Dictionary.com]
car·toon Audio pronunciation of "cartoon" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kär-tn)
n.
1.
1. A drawing depicting a humorous situation, often accompanied by a caption.
2. A drawing representing current public figures or issues symbolically and often satirically: a political cartoon.
2. A preliminary sketch similar in size to the work, such as a fresco, that is to be copied from it.
3. An animated cartoon.
4. A comic strip.
5. A ridiculously oversimplified or stereotypical representation: criticized the actor's portrayal of Jefferson as a historically inaccurate cartoon.
No where in there does it have an all encompasing definition for all types of animation... Basically a cartoon is a type of still picture or animation that's entire purpose is to be humourous in both style of drawing and situation within the drawing as well as any subtext like captions added. This excludes all anime I have ever seen as a result.

Okay....lets get this straight....
Cartoons...as we know...originated as pictures depicting humurous gags/situations/charicatures....
But as time went on....the word got applied to moving pictures too....animation.....
Now the word anime originates from the word animation and was addopted by Jp.....just as many other word have been in Japan from other languages....french, english, portuguese, etc....
The meaning is still the same though...anime=animation=cartoons.....
Yes...many anime have diviated from the "comidy" side of the meaning...but hey.....the word "cartoon" nowadays can be applied to anything animated in 2D or even 3D....
So basicly....language is always evolving...and the way I see it....anime...srious or not...are cartoons simply because they are done in the 2D....medium...
Even some Western cartoons deviate from what we could call cartoons if this term is only applied to comidy...
Anyways....I dont think I made much sense...sorry....I'm bad at explaining my view points and stuff~

i would very much like to think that animes are not cartoons, since if you actually see the American cartoons...its horrible. its like animation has 2 ranks. Lower rank is cartoons and higher is anime. lol

I feel sad forthos who cant see that both of them are animation and there for the same thing.....wether you use the word "cartoon" or "anime" to describe them is a matter of deffiniton....or what you'r deffinition is....
And I dont see why cartoons are geting such bad criticism......sure, they have very different qualities/style to what you would be called a cartoon.....buth they are both awsom....
I might be saying this coz I appriciate both as the medium of animation.....or telling a story through pictures.....
To name some good "cartoons":
The Simpsons, Family Guy, Invader Zim, The Lion King, Watership Down,Animal Farm, Bellevue Rendezvous, Spongebo Squarepants and many more...
Of course...its all up to taste....but all I'm saying is.....dont hate, appreciate(^^)~for what they are and not for what they are not...
In all theory, Anime is just a different type of cartoon. The only main difference is Anime is specific and recognized as Japanese Animation. People closely associate cartoons with American cartoons. However, in essence Anime is just animated better than that of your average cartoon.
*Futhermore, Anime is drawn to a more human likeness, than most cartoons.
Unlike the "cartoon", America and other culture's counterpart to anime, much of the Japanese animation shown is one of deeper, sometimes more mature themes, including developed storylines, linear plots, and aspects of violence, sex, drama, and comedy (not unlike live-action films in the States).
Lastly, it depends on the eye of the beholder if one would like to call Anime cartoons, then I won't argue with them. However, they are two distinct genres of animation, but fall under the same technique of Animation.
I personally, do not believe Anime should be considered cartoons, but just a genre of Japanese culture.
