The term, "Child", is used in HiMe and not Otome, YET, it was used just last episode! So apparently there's still some kind of connection...
lol..yes there is a connection..i mean it does have the exact same characters appearing in both, my point being that the storylines themselves do not cross. of course there will be similar names and such of different things in both worlds.

There are lots of cases in Otome when the writers assume you've seen Hime. The legend of the fire string ruby, for example. You're right that you don't need to watch Hime to understand the story of Otome, but it does give you a deeper understanding of the characters and their motivations...
Apart from the ones that weren't in Hime... and also the ones that were, but are completely different in Otome (like Shiho).
Maybe it's just good to watch from a completist point of view...

It's an OAV series, and the actual dvd episodes are only released every few months. They aren't aired on japanese tv, so they don't adhere to a normal programme schedule.
Next one (the penultimate episode, I think) is out May 25th.

lol, OAV = 'Original Animated Video', also known as OVA, as in 'Original Video Animation' (though OVA is used much more than OAV). Basically, they're straight to video (or rather DVD) releases. If you're new to this kind of terminology, you can usually find out their meanings on Wikipedia, if that's any help.
