Computer Graphics, watercolors and pencils oh my!
Back to pencil pics we go. With an unanimous decision from our judges, Basala takes week number 40! Only 5 weeks to go folks and as you can see the competition is starting to heat up. Basala delivers this pencil piece with near perfect execution of shade, character dynamics, and toughest of all - emotion. The character designs are excellent. Each one is different but fit perfectly together.

So I see many original and unique characters up there Basala... how long until you start releasing the mangaka? =)
I absolutely love that central character there... truly top notch work. Made my jaw drop about 5 feet. _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |

5 characters, each with different attitudes in their poise and faces. The gentle maiden looking towards the hero, the haughty aristocratic lady with her deragotory smirk and eyes looking slightly downwards in that 'what is this dirt' look. The cold aloof handsome male just staring straight ahead without emotions. The powerful brooding stranger whose secrets are concealed like his eyes in shadows. Lastly the bold hero in his broad stance covering a third of the entire area and eyes cast towards the maiden to show what he is protecting.
Most excellent, indeed... the only shameful thing I can say is that it is not a manga... |

astounding work! it is really excellent.
i am a huge fan of the sketchy style and shading of Hiroaki Samura's work (Blade of the Immortal). i don't know if you like him or not, but I see several things he does so well in this drawing also. the drawing is very skillfully depicting motion and emotion thru the style. The characters do not appear to be 'pasted' on the paper, they are lively within it. The expression on each characters face conveys paragraphs of information about them and what they're thinking. and its very cool when the artist invents their own weapons.
i hope bringing in Samura is not offending to you. i mean them all as compliments.
several have mentioned it before, is there a story in the making for the characters? |

Hi its me, sorry for the late reply.
I was busy with my exams this week, and I hate exams!!!!!
I hope I can live a easy life and just draw and draw and draw everyday....
anyway, thx for choosing my pic again, I felt truly honored.
However, had I have enough time I eould work on this piece a little more.
There was one pic that I submitted on a saturday and it failed get into that week's competition. Therefore this time I was aiming to get it done before last friday, so I would not be late again.
There is a story to all these charactors, which I had started thinking about 5-6 years ago, but never really try to turn it into a manga thing becuase I know with my limited ability, I would not be able to do a good job. About when I will start to release a mnaga serie.... I'd just say I am still too "AMAI" for that, but I am dreaming for that day to come.
about Hiroaki's work, I am a total fan of "the blade of the immortal" so I am rather ok than getting offended.
So there are 5 weeks left, eh?
Maybe I will try to enter the contest for one last time and c where I am at rith now.....thankyou people and keep drawing |

Oh, this is really nice.
I really like drational pencil drawing. I hope anime will always reamin hand-drawn.
Computer graphics is nice, but it lacks the physical contact of the artist and therefore lacks soul... umm, sorry for saying such weird things. |
