i agree, in the beginning it was kind of boring, but the episodes are getting better and better, and to this point it's getting really good and interesting.

so they finally decided to stick to the original plotline.. -_-

still.. its a little too late for me to actually like this anime.. its a little wacky(or rather whacked out compared tot he manga where the whackiness there was tight and cool) the awesome action isnt quite "there"(the animation quality is just lacking at the action parts).. and those freakin crow sensors are killing the only other reason to actually watch this... Wink

I've read the manga, and I don't know what people are complaining about. It's almost the same thing, or rather it's pretty much the same thing.

Whew, ep 16 was a lot darker than any other ep so far in this series. There was also a lot more blood and a lot less wackiness than I've become used to in this anime. Right now, I'm really enjoying this!

i disagree. have you really been reading it? sure theyre following it more closely in the last few eps but still.. overall its not a really good adaptation.

Sounds like you just want the manga put straight up on screen. That's not what adaptation is about. I don't see the point of sticking so close to the manga that there is absolutely no difference in story. If that were the case, it would be boring for me because I'd already know exactly what's going to happen.

Adaptation is about crafting a great story using the source material as a BASIS. The films of Lord of the Rings went way away from the books, but they weren't a bad adaptation, were they?

Rant over. Wink

no thats not what i mean, its expected to be alittle different, however, the animation quality isnt that good, and the way things are presented, the action, dialogue and stuff arent that good. lotr wasnt that bad because it was a good adaptation, the cinematography was great and the quality really shows, but not on air gear. even tenjo tenge's animation quality was better than this, and i thought it wasnt an all that great adaptaion of oh great's work. the problem is the studio that was picked for this project does sloppy work.

on another example, the anime of love hina has its differneces from its manga, yet it was ok as it was, but only coz the animation quality, consistency, music, was good throughout. another of akamatsu's works, negima as a manga was good however its anime wasn't because, once again, the quality of the animation was bad, it was inconsistent and the colors used were simple, with some cheap renders and poor use of cg effects.

those whove been watching anime for at least a year or two should by now be able to see through these things, or have you all just graduated from dragonsballs or something?(if thats's the case then i understand and apologize, my words arent meant for you then.. hey there was a time when i thought all anime was good too^_^")

im not an expert or anything but i have been seeing the stuff evolve since the late 80's. so dont lecture me about adaptation.

--
and no theres nothing wrong with people that dont watch this, thats such a retarded comment. i think theres something wrong with me on the other hand for still watching this after awhile. yeah sure i may have my complaints, but this is the only anime of air gear out there. just as thre is only that anime of tenjo tenge and of himiko den. really.. there hasnt been proper justice for Oh Great's works.. i hope the next installment of whatever he releases finally gets a worthy adaptation.

I apologise for 'lecturing' you about adaptation. I'm a creative writing graduate (and aspiring film/novel writer) so it's a habit I've got into regarding my specialist subject. Razz

However, your previous posts made it seem as though you were saying that, even though the anime was now following the manga storyline, it wasn't enough for you to like the anime. Now if that doesn't make it sound like you think sticking to the original story as much as possible is favourable to doing something original, I don't know what does! I may be entirely wrong of course. I know how difficult it is to convey your feelings in a post.

I also find it a little unfair of you to say I'd think all anime is great (even if that's me in amongst everyone else) and mentioning Dragonball in particular is hurtful, because I find it stupid and dull! This series isn't great. But it's not bad either. I only said I was enjoying it presently.

I do take your point about the technical issues with this anime, but there seems to be a trend amongst more experienced anime fans where these issues cause them to forget about story and character and the like. And while things like cinematography, art and animation are important, I'd say that story and character are more important by far. I mean, you can make a great anime with low production values and a brilliant story, but you can't make a great anime with stunning production values and nothing under the surface.

Finally, I'm yet to be convinced about the story and characters in this anime, but at the moment I find both quite interesting. Plus, the art isn't horrible even if it isn't as good as the manga. IMO, this is a solid but decidedly unspectacular adaptation.

I'm perfectly happy to continue this argument, but there doesn't seem to be much point doing it here if we're going to move away from Air Gear (which I could find myself doing), so why don't you pm me if you strongly disagree with what I've said. It might be fun. Wink

nah, dont wanna waste time on Pm'ing something average as an anime show as this, its already generated lots of talk anyway, im a bit happy theyre now following the story closely, the first few episodes were trash, they tried to make it feel so much like jet set radio that it seemed like a cheap thing to do to get attention. the story is great on its own.

i will say this, the story is good but its also about average(ive seen this type of story pattern a lot times by now), now what i do like a lot about air gear is the way the story is presented, visually, the action scenes, the way they are drawn, the characetre interactions, and i just feel that the they failed to capture most of that in the anime. almost all the stuff an animator can do to make shortcuts in the animation ive seen in this. there arent as much frames as needed in the action scenes its mostly static pictures being thrown about with little actual movement.

i only reacted coz you suddenly ranted about 'adaptation', i only said it wasnt a 'good adaptation'. and you seem to think that something not anime like lotr's adaptation is not far from airgear's. im not gonna go over your knowhow of stories, coz now that thyre following it i dont have any complaints on that part, ONLY the cheap visuals. ive already said that that(the visualls) was the reason i cant really like this despite now that theyre following the story.

Ah, no, that 'rant over' line was supposed to be tongue in cheek. I wasn't really ranting. And I wasn't saying that Air Gear was as good as LoTR. LoTR was just an example of an adaptation that didn't strictly follow the source material. Having said that, though, I do believe adaptation follows the same basic rules (if you can call them rules) whatever media you are adapting from and to, so it's perfectly legitimate to compare a film adaptation with an anime adaptation.

Everything else you say (about cheap visuals and such), I'll agree with.
