Wow.
Very rarely do I posess the inability to express my thoughts on an anime episode, but that word pretty much sums up the pilot for Melancholy. From the commercial sporting the AK to the horrible production values of the homemade cultural festival movie (which I'm guessing is what this episode is all about), this is one maniacal and hilarious anime.
Forget the fact that the movie they made made absolutely no sense. Just focus on the end credits. The choreographed dance routine is masterful! I loved every second of it. Time to put Photoshop to work. Well, surprise, surprise. The original character design is from the same person who did the Shakugan no Shana character designs. As for parallels in direction or script, there are none. Hmmm, perhaps my banter is parallel to the random directions that this anime is going upon...
I have said too much (and confused myself in the process). It's 2AM. I'll watch this again when I'm coherent. I'll probably still find it hilarious.
EDIT (9:43 AM): This show is just as funny as it was at 2 in the morning. You gotta love trying to spot all the mistakes in the production:
1) Useless Pan-ups
2) Ambient movements of passerbys
3) Crew is in camera shot
4) Mikuru is trying her best but just not cutting it
5) Continuity error (Mikuru's left eye turns blue for one scene requiring the beam and then is her original eye color for the rest of the movie, regardless of whether she uses the beam or not)
6) Fireworks debacle
That's just the tip of the iceberg. Five minutes into the show, you can kind of tell that this actually some high school group trying to do a video. Once you understand that, this thing becomes hilarious as you wait to see how they'll mess up next (and boy, do they mess up a LOT).
Oh, and that dance number in the credits. Time to test out my newly acquired ACA Capture Pro v5.10 software (boo to VirtualDub! It never played ANY of my video files except for a SnS RAW episode...). Signiature upgrade imminent.
By the way, those who haven't picked up on it yet, go watch this series. It's pretty damn funny! =D

This show was weird and not in the interesting way. I don't know if I should be thinking anything about this yet. I hope the first episode was a joke because it isn't reassuring. I stopped watching near the end so I might have missed something important, if anything.
I would consider watching an extra episode.
you obviously didn't get the joke... The first ep was done like an amateur film that the club did for the school Cultural Festival, hence the exteremly poor production values. Watch the whole episode next time.

Actually, I did get that part. I just didn't find it funny.
this left me thinking it was some hilarious parody ova of another anime series. then i read the anidb synopsis. a very radical way of starting off a new anime series.

ok....this one's really weird but funny...NO...Hilarious at the same time.
It's more like your "home-made Movie videos with amateur crews and actors/actresses".
Definitely a good show for laughs...
Lousy cameraman and characters pop out of nowhere, an alien witch that preventing the cat on her shoulder from falling.... _________________ PS3 Trophies

Wow, this show is anything but melancholy. Haruhi is weirder than I thought. Episode synopsis time:
Well, we do get to see the origins of the SOS Brigade. I found this episode to hilarious all around. Only of the few of the characters introduced in the first episode get reintroduced. I still enjoy watching Mikuru although she seems a little ditzy (Calligraphy Club?!?!?). Yuki looks to be the quiet brooding one. Mikuru seems to be the shy and reserved one. Haruhi is, no doubt, the leader of ragtag group of high school misfits and Kyon is functioning as the menial assistant doing the "other menial tasks" required to keep a club intact.
There is something about this series that draws my attention. It could have been Haruhi's different haircuts every day. Then she cuts it as soon as someone points it out. Either way, Haruhi is quite the character and very well deserves the anime to be named after her.

This one is an absolute KEEPER!!!
After the WTH?! of ep1, we got to see the real deal. I pity Kyon and Mikuru though, the former being the one who sparked the idea into Haruhi, the latter being dragged in for the "moe~~" factor

this show is awesome, haha. A couple more to add to your list:
- blurry camera shots
- camera unable to stay on the target or stop moving
- cast forgetting their lines or laughing during takes
- when two people are supposedly talking to eachother, every time the camera show changes between the two, the background noises change
This definitely has "student film" written all over it. As I watching the first episode (or Episode 00, I suppose), I was thinking, "wow this is freakin' hilarious" but at the same time I was also thinking "hmm, this could get old after 3 or 4 episodes, plus without any character development, I might lose interest." But when they revealed at the end that it really is a student film club, I took more of a shine to it. The next episode preview makes it appear to be a real anime series. Now I'm definitely interested.
Oh, and for the record, the funniest moment was "she doesn't have transformation sequences, she has to change physically like normal people." LMFAO!!!!!!! Bunny girls!!!!! Those random commercial spots are pretty funny, too.
PS - ooh, and just in time.. Episode 2 has just become available _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
started watching the first episode and the opening was seemed really odd.. but it was catchy so i kept watching and then i was lost for a min or so but then i figured out it was probably a student movie or somthin and i found it really funny..
watched second episode today and i loved it.. i havn't burnt a complete series on cds for a long time and i'm definately keeping every single episode from this one.. that should say how much i like this show..
lol the funny thing is i liked the opening of the 00 episode more than the original openning of the show.. and the dance sequence in the ending song is fun to watch too xD
on the other hand i downloaded soul link episode 2 by mistake while thinking it was this show.. and it was ok.. i kinda had to force myself to keep watching it.. although i might end up watching the next episode and there better be a good fight scene or somthin.. [i know this really doesn't belong here ]
Is it just me or are there alot of bad data in torrents nowadays?
I've been stuck at 99.7% for episode 2 for more than a day while downloading more than 500mb worth of useless data. This isn't the only file, i get that from zegapain and a few others as well. Anyone here having the same problems as me?

That might be something on your end. Try using a different bittorrent client (I use Azureus and everything downloads fine with very few, if any, hash fails or worthless data).
Is anybody else falling in love with that ED theme? I find it insanely upbeat and catchy. I also learned the dance routine (it was actually quite easy...) that goes with it. The music in the series actually reminds me of the Chobits music. I'm going to look into it and see if they are the same composers...
*checks*
Well, I'm totally wrong. Still, the similarities are there. Either way, I now have three animes that I am watching on a week to week basis (it's been a while since I have done that). SOS Brigade for life!!!
I actually have a question regarding the first episode:
Does anybody know why Yuki attacked Mikuru after she did her first Mikuru Beam??? It's been bothering me for a while now...
