it's official... it was made by KyoAni... I'm sure there are some talented fan-artists out there, but no one would be good enough to pull off something as smooth and high-quality as this

yeah, kinda dopey at parts, but give them credit... they had to fill in those holes without disrupting what they already had. Not an easy task, they did do a beautiful job. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I actually thought the whole series was just okay...... It was pretty funny every once and a while but when it wasnt being funny it was just being........there. It wasnt a horrible anime, but I dont think it warrants as much praise as it does.....unless Im missing something.

this is the problem with hype. New comers expect to be totally blown away by what everyone else is gushing on and on about, and usually it sets the bar too high. In this case, a lot of "blah" and "meh" is coming out from people are just seeing it for the first time.
What I think is the key to the series is the cast of characters. There's a mismatched dynamic going on with all these different "oddities" sitting in the same room together, yet they all get along so well.
Another major thing is that people now have the "luxury" of watching bundles of episodes in a row. They're missing out on the mysterious anxiety that those who watched one episode a week are missing. It was agony having to wait for conclusions and answers. Remember, "always leave'em wanting more."
The third and most prominent aspect is the beautiful art and the fantastic soundtrack. Very lively music all throughout.
Personally, I'm very interested in the subject-matter. I don't want to say much without spoiling, but stuff like aliens, psychic-powers and time-travel are very appealing to me. The way they talk about those things so matter-of-factly and so non-chalantly makes it seem like it could be real.
I could go on, but it's easier to just do this:

maybe the real reason 4 this anime to be so popular is bcoz the way of the anime being presented, most anime nowaday is about stuff that we know is fiction or something that impossible to happen by only watching the 1st ep, but this anime make we us think that it could have happen or it might be real (about the alien and stuff that happen in this anime).....
juz take the example of death note..... if the the way of the manga is being presented is cliche, i dont think it will be so popular this day.....
well, just hope that the 2nd season of this anime will not dissapointed the fan...
i juz hope that they hv a new, intresting plot in the 2nd season.....

Well, here are my thoughts on the different aspects of the anime that made it a very appreciated fan favorite and the #1 anime for 2006 as ranked by A-S.
But first off, to answer mikuru-san's question about the cat:
The cat was picked up by Nagato in the light novel when Kyon is narrating the events of the whole movie making process. Haruhi wanted a cat and thought it would be great that it can speak, thus at that point, the cat (named Shamisen) started talking. He stopped talking after the movie was finished.
Hope that clears things up.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, here's the breakdown for the series.
Story:
The story of MoHS/SHnY is very original. This is the first time, for me anyway, to come across a story such as this. First, we have the title character who is the star of the show, but yet all the events are narrated in the eyes of Kyon. Then there's the actual story of Haruhi who has the power to change the world/universe but has no clue of her abilities and coincidentally gathers a crew of mysterious and interesting members who all are against her finding out about herself. Stick in a neutral conscience (Kyon) and welcome in the situational humor.
The Characters:
Without spoiling too much, besides Haruhi and Kyon, the other main characters all have a different type of personality. You have the "yes-man", the "damsel in distress" and the "quiet one" together in one room or out for adventure with Haruhi.
Haruhi's character is just out of this world. She's energetic enough to be the forefront of the SOS Brigade and therefore is the playmaker that leads everyone into trouble. Though she is represented as academically brilliant, there are times where she is quite dense to the happenings around her, which probably means her common sense prevents her from seeing the strange events that she or others are causing to the normal world. Nonetheless, her straight forward attitude keeps things interesting on the show.
As Kyon is none of the three character archetypes I mentioned above, he is stuck with the bill of speaking on behalf of the three other members to Haruhi and also pretty much stuck with the responsibility to keep Haruhi under control.
The other three either are too scared to confront Haruhi, too silent, or too agreeing to oppose. Therefore this mixture of personalities added to the craziness that is Haruhi with the comical narration of Kyon makes their relationship with each other quite entertaining. The great thing is that they all have a different interpretation of Haruhi, but won't agree with each other, though they don't directly express it too well.
The Anime Series:
The short length of the anime is what kept the show so good. I do wish that they had more content, but if it came down to quality vs quantity, I would definitely stick with quality. It left me wanting more and therefore the series finished on a high note, with a sense that there needs to be more, but there isn't more. Leaving many with hopes of a second season and other stuff. You get the point, I hope.
The series itself was well animated. It didn't resort to exaggerated animation styles found in other shows like Bleach or D.Gray-man, to name a few. Everything besides the sci-fi elements of the anime stayed very true with the physics of real life. I'll just have to let the dropkick from Haruhi to the computer president slide. The whole dance sequence was awesome and the animated concert was well done syncing with the music from the song.
Then there's the mixed sequence of events for the show. Let me tell you, the transition from episode 3 and 4 was pretty hard to cope with the first time around. I came in to the series when only eps 1-5 were out. I thought someone mislabeled the episodes so I went back to episode 3 to check the previews. I don't know if I'm the only one to believe this, but in the previews, it felt as if whatever episode Haruhi desired, that would be the episode. Just one of those small tidbits that hinted at the kind of powers Haruhi had. Anyway, the mixture in the episodes kept things interesting because it was like trying to piece things because the show kept dropping references to events in the past that were in upcoming episodes. The only thing that was not out of order was the actual "Melancholy" story arc. The other episodes are small stories and therefore really didn't need any specific order.
What's great about this show is its shelf life. I went back to watch this series again just so I could understand all the references and catch the other references that I missed such as the incident with Haruhi asking if Mikuru should have her hair in a ponytail. I thought nothing of it until I rewatched that episode after finishing the series and made the connection.
Narration:
Kyon is hilarious as the narrator. He somehow finds the time to crack jokes in the most dire of situations. And then there are his thoughts about his fellow club members. From affection and obsession of Mikuru to his frustrations with Itsuki, it all helps develop his character. Also, because it is narrated by Kyon, all events revolve around what he's involved with. We don't see what happens with the other characters and that's what makes this anime interesting as well.
Other shows sometimes focuses on different characters at different times. But here, we follow Kyon throughout and that makes room for character development, attachment to him and the story, and we are influenced to think about the other characters according to how Kyon thinks about them. Plus we have no idea how the other characters are thinking and we have to rely on Kyon just like everyone else.
The Light Novels:
This is where the beef of the whole Haruhi story lies. I've read five of the novels already, reading a few pages each day at lunch. There is so much backstory in them, which ultimately helps me understand all the references in the anime. In the show, the episodes span a good amount of time. It's not just a month or two, but more closely to half a year or so. There is an enormous amount of references to the events that they have experienced in both the show's content and even in the ending credits.
Example: The image of Kyon with a reindeer costume.
The novels are also canonical and therefore are the real deal. It's not fan-made and therefore it comes from the creative mind of the author. Although what I'm reading goes through the process of being translated by fans, I doubt I'm subjective to misinterpretations because of it.
Overall:
Overall, this series had a lot of material to work with and to keep things short and condensed left a lot of room for personal fun such as (my personal favorite) trying to figure out all the references and also different variants of interpretation about the other characters, Kyon himself, and what makes Haruhi tick.
I don't think I can say enough about Haruhi's character. She just has that kind of spunk in her that kept this show interesting. I hope those who've seen the series understand what I'm saying. For those who haven't, I'll leave it up to you to find out why it is that Haruhi and the rest of the show has created such a huge fandom.

I've seen searching around, and I've seen several pics of the possibly new MOSH season. It's in kanji, but I could roughly translate it into "The Breakdown of Suzumiya Haruhi".
Not sure if this's a doujin, but didnt look like it. Can anyone confirm this?

Of all the novels, none of the titles match "Breakdown".
The available titles are:
* Volume 1 - The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 2 - The Sighs of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 3 - The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 4 - The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 5 - The Rampage of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 6 - The Wavering of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 7 - The Intrigues of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 8 - The Indignation of Suzumiya Haruhi
* Volume 9 - The Dissociation of Suzumiya Haruhi
It's probably been discussed non-stop already, but everyone's debating over whether or not the next possible season should be Vol 2 or Vol 4. I personally would like to see Vol 4 as Vol 2 only narrates the making of the Mikuru movie whereas Vol 4 is incredibly interesting. Then they can insert random episodes in from Volumes 3 and 5.
Can you provide links to what you've seen? _________________ [img:100:69:fe0eceb8dc]http://www.ninenines.net/ninesblog/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/fight1.gif[/img:fe0eceb8dc]

I don't understand a word it says on those images, but from the looks of those with your other post comments, I'm leaning towards the idea that the "Breakdown of SH" is more of a title of a magazine article than it is a preview of a new season. _________________ [img:100:69:fe0eceb8dc]http://www.ninenines.net/ninesblog/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/fight1.gif[/img:fe0eceb8dc]

Yes, the anime was nice, all round...
Though I don't quite want to end the anime at the last episode, I want to see more Character development and so on... But still a nice anime, It had a different twist in terms of storylines with the present types of animes. _________________ [IMG:300:100:3f69ff83fa]http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o196/takuto01/Sigv6.jpg[/img:3f69ff83fa]
