Okay...I hope no one did this before...so here goes.
I know a lot of you have probably had this situation. Your friends all say anime is weird...they don't care you watch it, but they believe all the stereotypes, and dont really want to watch it. BUT for the ones that say they 'll give it a shot, what is a good anime to get them on the right path . You've got one chance to get your friend hooked....so it has to be something great.
Of course to do this, it would have to be an anime that doesn't fit most of the stereotypes of anime; such as mechs, fan service, excessive nudity, gore, and also not seeming childish. It would also have to be an anime that has an interesting enough first episode to not make them say it sucks, and also be short enough to get them to want to watch it all and not say "it's good, but way too long for me to watch." Also if possible it should be an anime that would appeal to both guys and girls. If not one for each maybe. Last of all, I think it should be dubbed, even though dubbed versions arent as good generally (if you can get a friend to watch it, you dont want them to complain about reading subtitles right off the bat).
I've seen a fair amount of anime, and I've had trouble making a list that would fit this. All I could come up with were maybe fumoffu or last exile....if even those. Any suggestions? Any other requirements you think I missed?
FMP Fumoffu and Last Exile were both great animes, i must say. Fumoffu was hilarious and Last Exile had a great plot as well as action. I get what you're trying to say, I have had that problem too with a few friends of mine. The only thing that I ended up watching with them was Yugioh, even if it was only one episode. only because I had it on as we did homework. I guess something good to start off with would be an action based anime like Last Exile as you suggest, because it has amazing special effects and a great story. Maybe other animes you could try to watch are Azumanga Daioh or Erementar Gerad. I let my cousin borrow Azumanga and he and his friends, some female, liked it because it was hilarious. I also recommend Erementar Gerad, just because it is pretty new, and has a good story with a little but of romance involved, which may make an impression on your friends. Even though it is subbed, that could also be a plus, because now they are forced to watch and read, or if not, just watch and you can fill in whats happening with more emphasis, heh.
I'm not really sure if any of these helped or even made sense, but I too am trying to get my friends hooked on anime. Also, try to keep away from animes that confuse too much. They'll either not want to keep up with the weirdness or just give up because they might think all anime is like the one they just saw. That's just me, i guess.
