In fact, judging from the following video, they shouldn't have weapons of any kind.

I fear for my life.

The world hasn't exploded (yet), so give us a little credit. I don't know what entity you are suggesting step up and take the lead because we already know that we can't count on the United Nations to risk their necks for any cause. Granted the media in America is skewed and the average American has no idea what's going on outside the country (or in it, for that matter), but it's obvious that the feds have some semblance of knowing what they're doing.

I'm not defending every action that the US takes, but I can't help but feel insulted when outsiders try to make such snap judgements against us as a whole. (not saying that you are, just people in general)

I didn't watch the video yet since I'm still at work, but for the record, I am totally in favor of wiping every nuclear weapon off the face of this planet. When I studied a bit on nuclear war, our professor explained that it will only take the detonation of one unit to start a global massacre (since it'll turn into a battle of retaliation).

I know this is an english forum, but as an Ecuadorian I really can hold this one in:

GRINGOS IDIOTAS!!!!!

Puff.... that felt good.

Anyway, that applied for the (rather large) common folk who doesn't even have a clue where they are standing at. If you have a larger awareness of the world then you're off the hook.

I still think it is pretty damn dangerous when people have such half-assed thoughts though. Not only do they not know where North Korea is, but they don't even know why they would nuke it in the first place. The combination of such a lazy mentality and power can pretty much justify any kind of action or massacre, and that is simply unacceptable. After all, I guess that it is ok to give some people a lower life expectancy and birth rate if that means you can exercise your "freedoms" and enjoy cheap gas... Stupid hicks. And I was wondering who votes republican these days. Gee, what I wonder now is why are there terrorists out there who hate America. I'm not saying that terrorism is good (its not), but I can see why some folks are pissed that some other idiot with a superiority complex can pass judgement on your life and your fellows so easily, stupidly and without a second thought.
This is one of the things why I'm glad that democracy is not as direct as it is made out to be. As long as the ones with brains hold these in check I guess its better than nothing.

So yeah, there are idiots in America. There are idiots EVERYWHERE. And in a specially edited newspiece that carefully selects the most...'interesting' responses, any country could be made to look like xenophobic morons.

As for nuclear weapons (just to take the title of this thread and run with it), I'm personally of the opinion that deterrance - simultaneously the most stable and the most unstable policy ever - has continuously proven itself to be effective. Even in the post-Cold War era, one only has to look at the comparatively free lease that North Korea has had (the word 'comparatively' being important, in that there have actually been attempts at negotiations rather than the threats that other countries such as Syria or, previously, Iraq have received), which is quite simply because they atually HAVE nuclear weapons, and 'Axis of Evil' or not - nuclear weapons do successfully deter. The (semblence of an) improvement in the relationship between India and Pakistan since they each attained nuclear weapons is another relatively recent example, since the simple risk of a nuclear confrontation has prompted the search for more diplomatic solutions. So if anything, history has proven that while the policy of deterrance is theoretically an incredibly unstable one, it has nonetheless proven in practice to be surprisingly safe.

And certainly, a complete absence of nuclear weapons in the world would be preferable, but unfortunately entirely impossible. For once the technology exists you are no longer living in a word with 'zero' nuclear powers, but rather with a permanent potential of 'one'. And having a single nuclear power is infinitely more dangerous than the system of multiple powers that we have today, quite simply because there would be no one else capable of stopping, threatening, or DETERRING them. And thus, the current system works.

Which frankly, is how I know that at least the American government aren't as completely idiotic as some imply. If they were, they'd have attempted to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on North Korea already, and we can imagine how that would work out...

I'm amazed at how people are with their world geography. Not only that, but they have such poor reasoning. It looks like whatever they're intentionally trying to target next, in the end, poor Australia will be the one in smithereens.

...I have this itchy feeling, isn't there a regular here from Australia?

omgf that is so funny i can't beliefe their geography marks must be really poor eh?
australia become iran,n.korea, dll hahahaha that is so crazy

anyway why when they put the thing is always in aussie?

hmm and one persone there looks like want to destroys all the world and left america alone(or is it)
anyway i really amaze by their geography skill totally ""good""
SWT

well but the maker also make a dumb question but also important
but he/she should put the reasoning of everybody inside
but oh well

anyway i'm thinking more about
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD NOT MISUSE THE TOOLS TO WEAPON
so that no people in the world would be able to kill people
and to solve problems in peacefull way(ideally in imaginary world)

but then again with movie, games, our environment, and many more
it is imposible since it gives example to child that violence is cool or violence is the only solving point or other things

anyway it is not i'm ungratefull or what
it's just that maybe i'm just dissapointed with how the world changed
but things has happened so better do someting to stop that heh?

looks like i'm talking too much eh?
and please no offence ok and forgive me if any of my opinion offence you

I don't know why you're upset. These people don't make decisions, they simply die for those who make the decisions.

They also elect people who make said decisions that kill their own, but no one is perfect.

I'm hoping, PRAYING even, you realise that this thread refers to the second half of the video, where they managed to name Australia "France" or "Iraq" or what-not, as oppose to the first half, where nice friendly people mentioned Canada should be bombed.

The people shown weren't made out to be xenophobic morons, just morons... I'm sure you already know that though. *fingers crossed*

You do all realize that that is heavily biased, and would have edited out every single correct statement or people who said "That map is inaccurate".

When looking any sort of communication, what is present is important, as well as what is missing.

Is it my imagination or was Austrailia labeled North Korea on that map? I'm NOT going to defend the intellegence of Americans after all not only did "W" get elected once but was actually re-elected. I could go into a long rant about how that happened but I'll spare you.

The truth is we really don't know how many people they interviewed that actually knew what the hell they were talking about. They most likely did end up on the cutting room floor. However, there is a LOT of ignorance and apathy in the U.S. and it always seems like the average American just doesn't know and doesn't care.

The really sad fact is that "the American Dream" where hard work and perseverence will result in tangable reward is fading fast. "We The People" are being short changed because the video clip shows the view that the media and the polititions have of the average American. Those of us that know better are busy working our butts off just to survive. Meanwhile the ignorant concider us "nut's" or "weirdo's" everytime we point out that "business as usual" is not an acceptable mode of survival.

I think everyone knows that the American public school system teaches things from a very self centric view of things. They don't know what the capital of Canada is (no, its not Toronto) nor where the Middle East is on that world map but damn, they could probably tell you where all 50 States are and their state capitals.

There's actually a show in Canada that just goes down to the states and interviews normal Amercians off the street on world issues.

Oh lets not forget the Americans who come up to Canada in the middle of summer with skis hoping the hit the slopes.. rofl (i'm not joking here).

The reporters changed the "Australia" marker to "Iran."

I hope no one here thinks all Americans are this dumb. I researched poll-taking to death all throughout college and it's not easy to get an accurate cross-section of the population. Plus, the media here (in this case CNN) tries to be as extreme as possible, which is why we only saw the dumbest people (I highly doubt any of them have any college education and most of those people have been out of HS for years, if not decades).

Here's my 2 cents upon the matter:

I perfectly understand how America should not have nuclear weapons, but...

During the Truman Presidency, he learned of the Manhattan project, a project to design a weapon so powerful that it would finally put an end to the long years of World War II. It was also to counter the Nazi's in their race to find the method of making the feared Atomic Bomb. (The Nazi's, fortunately, did not find the right way first, or else no doubt Great Britain and the Soviet Union would have been in grave danger.)

Well, America did succeed and used it on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and soon the War in the Pacific ended. Why? The death tolls were so enormous. It was predicted that an inland invasion into Japan, like what General Eisenhower did in the Invasion of Normandy, France, on D-Day, would have costed an estimated 1.1 million American soldiers' lives. Therefore, Truman decided to use the bomb, however much hesitant he was to begin with.

Therefore, the motives of the creation of the bomb were aimed for the good, however much the results of it were disastrous.

We may all put together and try to remove/dismantle all the nuclear warheads, but now that America has them, I believe we should not remove them, due to the Cold War, and its lingering effects. With Iran persuing uranium enrichment research and North Korea and Pakistan already armed with these deadly weapons, I believe that dismantling American nuclear warheads is highly infeasible, as well as unreasonable.

While it is true to "set a good example for others to follow", but I leave you with these wise words:

Chapter II. WAGING WAR
4. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.
