Nintendo finally announced the price and date from a conference at New York. The system will cost $249.99 USD (just below $250 lol) and will launch at November 19, two days after the PS3 launch, mainly because they don't want to be overshadowed by Sony. Japan will get their Wii by December 2, a two week difference just like they did with the DS release. Though, Japan's will cost around $213.
The price isn't so bad if you compare it to an Xbox360. An Xbox360 core unit cost around $300, just $50 more than the Wii. However, Xbox360 doesn't have a WiFi built-in. A WiFi adapter costs around $100.
So in a different kind of perspective, Wii's value without a WiFi is $150.
The Wii won't be released alone either. It will be bundled with a sports pack game where you could play baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, and boxing (<-- something they haven't shown before). A bundled pack which hasn't been done by Nintendo since the SNES launch. The game may be a $25 value?
So maybe if we take that into consideration, the actual console itself may be $125 lol.
It comes with a Wiimote and a nunchaku. Buying an extra Wiimote costs $39.99 separately ($32 in Japan) and the nunchaku $19.99 ($15 in Japan). A Wii controller for playing classic games would also cost around $15 in Japan. Not sure if it'll be available for US, but I think it will. It's suppose to be free if you buy a 5000 Wii points. Points which you could use for buying Virtual Console games or a Wii Opera browser.

It's just too bad that most of the games won't be in high definition .

Huh. Yea, I figured they'd do something like that. Bastards.
Right now, I'm debating about whether or not I should clear out my savings account just to get a Wii, and if it's really worth it..
:Edit:
The Wii Conference just occured recently over in New York, have fun skimming through it since the article does a time-based coverage of Wii's Press Conference.

Controller prices are going to be the death of me. THAT's how Wii will be making money hand over fist. Wii-mote and nunchaku sold SEPERATELY!!! Yummy. Not to mention that classic controller as well. Boy, will I have a grip to buy when Smash Bros comes out...
No online multiplayer yet...
No Mario Galaxy as launch title...
Oh well, I still have my Zelda!!!
I was really hoping they would try out the $199 deal... Alas, I guess it's for the included game and Wi-Fi support. Bah, they should have had the cojones to put it at $199.
4 million worldwide by the end of the year? Are their eyes too big for their stomach???

Eh... what do fanboys know? To make a good guess as to how well a system will do you have to look at the business facts. For instance Wii is not only much cheaper but will be profitable from launch unlike 360 and ps3, more profit means more support by developers who want piece of the action. Increased developer support leads to more games being produced in a wider variation of genre and everone knows The Law of Video Game Genre tm "The number of genres supported by a console is directly propotional to the number of player who demand that genre"(not quite perfect). Thus many analyst predict Nintendo being on top of this console generation in terms of profit and support. Most of those ppl are just being baised.
But we also admit that Wii's graphics is nothing special. More like Xbox 1.2, even Nintendo admits to that. And the fact that Wii have seperate cost for the nunchuck controller. The nunchuck was seperate from controller, and even the controller itself. Infact, you only have one controller in the whole Wii package, minus the nunchuck controller... And not including the games and I think there's no online yet for the Wii...
More like you will spend more in accesories than the Wii itself. I think the cheap cost of Wii was just a gimmick for what the real cost of Wii is...

Okay so the Wii does not have 360 or ps3 graphic capabilities, but that does not mean its graphics are weak. It suppose to be at least 5 time more powerful than the GC which is pretty decent but lets not also forget that ps2 the most successful console of the last gen had the weakest graphical capabilities, this fact pretty much moots any agruements about graphics not up to par. Secondly Xbox owners need to buy Nic cards, subscriptions to Live, headsets and whatever else Microsoft tells them they need (not to meantion stuff for Hi-Def). Wii is wireless out of the book like the DS, connection is pretty much free and the games are cheaper for
retail and development
