In Japan...its not much of an issue. Nintendo has always been firts or second in the leagues ovver there....
But in the West, theres a completly different gaming culture. Many of the more obvious "japanese" games that come out on PS in Jp dont make it to the West....
Nintendo however dont make many of the games that would be found more appealing to Westerners~(such as many sports/racing and shoot'em ups)......the games are seen much more Japanese or "kiddy"....
which is why I think in the West, they will be relying heavily on fans....
I see where you're coming from and yes, the gaming culture is indeed different in the west. But I think that you're still left with the impression of what GameCube has left behind. We may see a different era from Wii and might show that they may have learned from their mistakes. New games could be developed from this revolutionary console that would even be helpful for doctors or scientists. Then again, maybe your speculation will be true. We'll see. But it's hard to think that they'll only be relying on fanbase since, as I've said for before, developing games for this console will be cheap so developers would really wanna tackle on this. Don't even be surpised if they have hentai games out for Wii. Second of all, don't you think that Sony is the one that will be relying on fanbased instead of Nintendo (assuming you know how much the PS3 will be set for)?. Third, Microsoft elimanated their plan for price drop now that they heard that the cheapest PS3 will cost $200 more than their Xbox360 and most likely the Wii will sell for $199 in U.S. Which console would parents buy for their kids for Christmas? Fourth, why did Microsoft admittedly fell in love with it and why did Sony also decided to add motion sensor to their PS3 controllers? Fifth, they'll also be launching World Wide like Microsoft did (IIRC). I could go on.. I think... o_o;

PS3 will rely on fans.....but I dont think its the same kind of fanbase you'd get with Nintendo......Sony having always been more of a catch'em all consol....despite many of its "kiddy" games not being popular....
Many features of console and controls that have become standered on all consoles are because of Nintendo......so for other consoles to copy new features would not be surprising....
I guess the only way to see is to wait till they come out......predictions are limited at this early stage of the next consoles war....

I dunno, I don't really like the name Wii, maybe because I can't see the meaning behind the name, and why they chose to change the name. I figured the name Revolution sounded better, and made more sense, for it represented a kind of 'revolution' in how games are played, as per it's new controller.
Can someone please give me a serious meaning as to why Wii was chosen as the name plz? not just the whole 'we' thing, but also why they chose to spell Wii the way it's spelled. I dunno, I don't like changes if they appear useless. I'm just the type of person who wants a straightforward meaning.

Well in Japan the letter "e" would be pronounced as "eh"...kina like....in the word...."Elk"....
I think that made sence~(Oo)
And so actualy spelling it with an "e" would have a diff pronounceation....
Plus....Wii can be easaly said in any languange.....unlike the word Revolution.....

As almost everybody knows, Wii is pronounced "we" in English.
In German, it would be "wie." In French, it would be "oui." And there are probably more homonyms in other languages all from this one unique word.
In Japan, the use of 'wi" was discarded decades ago and was replaced with "ui" ever since. It was so long ago that it practically never existed. Most people think that the japanese people wouldn't be able to pronounce it, but they'll be just replacing the "wi" part with "ui" in saying the name. So to say, this is pretty genius of Nintendo.

In summary to the link for the lazy people, Nintendo also said that the two i's represted two controllers, as in "'we' playing together" kinda thing and the 'w' is still in the rumor section but they think that it represents stereoscopic digital projection. I hope my explanation helps.
Update: I forgot to mention this... Wii doesn't have to be abbreviated as compared to its competitors PS3 (Playstation 3) or 360 (Xbox360 or Xbox2 or Xbox Next).

Oh, I just recently read somewhere that Satoru Iwata has no regrets over the name for Wii. It was kinda the same back then with Game Boy was there were questions like whether if girls were allowed to play it. Until DS came out, Game Boy Advance the champ for portable console.
I've also recently read that the Wii Virtual Console games that you download would cost about $4.50-$8.99 USD.
