Wow, just watched the final ep...Crazy ending, A little different from the manga.
They gave Light's death a hint of tragedy (although I'm not sure he deserved it).
The blood spraying out of Mikami looked so unrealistic though. Complete sensationalism. But the fact that he committed suicide right there was realistic.
@ Ebi: I don't think he is 9. If I remember right, but he and Mello are the same age.
Jummon: I don't think he deserved it either. I'm biased because I always hated Light, but even thinking more objectively it doesn't fit the character or even the way the story developed.
Near IS younger than Mello, but he isn't 9 in the last episode. I am guessing that by this last episode he is in his early teens, maybe like 13 or so. The reason is simple. Mello left the orphanage in 2007. Near made the SPK in 2012 and it all ends the following year. if you say that he is 9 at the end, it means that he was L's most likely successor at age 4. Does the near of episode 27 look 4 to you? _________________
seriously, everyone thats related to light (that helped him) basically died and light got out witted by a kid that plays with toy dolls..... speech less on that.
Misa also committed suicide, so unfair.... i was hoping for somewhat of a different ending then the manga.
But i just got a great idea, they or someone should make a OVA of death note thats like an alternative ending.
also can put in like a commercial break with Kira on a big screen, and then Near comes in with the hammer and smashes the big screen lol (like the 1984 commercial of apple)
Misa committed suicide? Did she know about Light's death? In the manga, vol 13 (The extra book that ties up the story) says Misa dies peacefully in a few years after the story ends because of the 2 Shinigami Eye deals so it kinda sucks even Misa died like that.
Not sure where everyone's getting this idea that Misa committed suicide from...she was just standing on the edge of a building at the end of it...If this constitutes as suicide then so be it, but doesn't look like it to me. This has brought back memories of the end of the manga, where there's a lot of people in robes lining up to go up to the edge of a cliff holding candles, of which Misa is one of those. Surreal?
Almost a perfect show ... up to the very last episode. The fact that the last twist was the twist that I actually managed to see coming an episode ahead aside, I thought some of the actions taken during episode 37 were out of character (specially when concerning Light).
I mean he was a super genius up to the very last minute and then suddenly turned into an idiot. From my point of view it is unfeasible for someone who managed to manipulate/predict everyone's movements so perfectly for months (when he discarded the Death Note to prove his innocence) to suddenly leave a massive gaping hole in his plans. I mean knowing that the enemy's method of attack is to replace the note, isn't it logical to plan for the possibility that they may actually succeed in the switch?
Even if we think that Mello's stunt wasn't foreseeable, Light should have taken precautions simply because the SPK could have been very thorough and checked all of Mikami's belongings (including his safety deposit box in the bank) regardless of any suspicious activity on Mikami's side. He could have simply told Mikami "Yo, make sure to test the Note before you actually put both of our lives at risk with it" or "Stay out of sight for 40 seconds to make sure it works; if it doesn't quickly add my name to it".
Some people say he became arrogant at the last moment, but then again he was arrogant even in episode one so nothing really changed in that department. He simply seems to have lost a lot of IQ points.
Heck, all that aside all he needed to do after he was "caught" was say something like "How would we know this man isn't working with you to incriminate me? I mean there's no way for us to know exactly how you managed to get the Death Note in your possession". Instead he turned into a raving lunatic and confessed. All the evidence against him were circumstantial anyways, a good lawyer would have gotten him off.
Always, I guess I'll add light's name to my list of smart "villains" that shouldn’t have died the way they did ... yeap, right next to Grand Admiral Thrawn.

I'm pretty sure they were trying to show that she commited suicide without actually showing it. I mean first off, she was in front of the guard rail standing on the very edge of the building. I dunno about you, but I wouldn't hop over a guard rail just to take a closer look at the city.
Second off, take a look at the look in her eyes. She's pretty much given up all life now that Light is dead. Plus, if I remember correctly, she closed her eyes very slowly right before they cut to a different shot. That's director's language for "This character's dead." or "about to die." sorta like how in the old black and white films they used to show two characters smoking a cigarette to show that they just had sex.

LoL that's a nice theory...anyway i still prefer the manga ending....but both just makes me pity Light, i mean he looks pathetic in the end, where's the cool and evil face he always showed? At least die like a man with honour i might say...oh ya and in the manga
he said 'shit' if i'm remembered correctly before he died. That send me laughing.
Even if we think that Mello's stunt wasn't foreseeable, Light should have taken precautions simply because the SPK could have been very thorough and checked all of Mikami's belongings (including his safety deposit box in the bank) regardless of any suspicious activity on Mikami's side. Light foresaw that Near would have switched the Notebook, thats why he told Mikami to make a fake to allow Near to steal it. What he didn't expect was that Mikami would take out the real Death Note to kill Takada because he had given him orders not to any point in time, take out the death note until the final day.
If you didn't read the manga, you missed out on this explanation. In the end, it was Mikami's loyalty and ironically, his ability to think almost like Light that caused the downfall of Light because he thought about what Light would have done and thinking that Light had no way of killing people without the notebook, went and did it for him anyway, thus alerting the SPK of the presence of the real Death Note which allowed them to steal the real death note.
Even Near admitted that had Mikami not suddenly acted out of his normal routine ( He follows his daily routine meticulously) and went to the bank to get the Death Note, they would all have been dead on that day, not knowing that they had taken a fake Death Note from Mikami.
But anyway, its true though that it was stupid of Mikami not to test the notebook before going.
That explaination was given in the anime and I understood all of it perfectly. If you re-read my original post you'll see that what I'm saying is
Mikami hid the note in his safety deposit box. From what we had seen of Light's personality and way of thinking, I would have expected him to prepare for the possibility that Near's people would find the actual Dead Note no matter where it was hidden or how often it was being used. It's just a simple contingency plan that you'd expect someone of Light's intellect to have prepared.
I mean even if Mikami hadn't gone against Light's orders, Near could have simply been very thorough and searched Mikami's safety deposit box anyways.
Light's plan to allow Near to steal a fake death note and hide the actual one until the last minute to use it on everyone with the knowledge of the note was great. But him not having a plan B in case that didn't work (for any reason) was out of character for me.
The worst FUCKING ending ever to a great series!!!!!!
Sometimes I wonder if im better off not watching these type of series then to watch it and then get really disapointed later on. also realise it was a waste of time.
I could go all night about this terrible lame ending.but i dont feel like starting up a debate here.
I would really love an alternate ending to this series.
Fucking shit... Why did they have to destroy this anime with that utterly retarded ending.. I'M PISSED!!!!! ARRRRRGH _________________ 'I learned at a very young age that I cannot trust in or count on anyone but myself.

Come on, the ending wasn't that bad. Light was destined to die anyways. It would have been nice if near had died though.
Just finished the series so here are a few impressions.
- Loved the fast pace and psychological elements in the story.
- I kept trying to remember the transfers of death notes from owner to owner. I still don't get exactly how it happened, so thinking about it detracted a bit from the second half of the story.
- I thought it was cool how the detectives and kiras can be thought of as either arms/hands or legs/feet(from the episode where light and L fight). The hands acted faster and tried to gain through direct confrontation, leaving flaws but cunning and gutsy enough to cover them up. Feet were generally more wary, luring the opposition in while on the defense, but backing a more powerful punch(or should i say, kick) in the end.
EDIT- I was wondering, does light count as an antagonist?
the ending was really b**sh*t cmon could they just leave kira win i would be better anyways i havent read the manga but i think its just like in gantz no money = unbelievable ending in the anime series and manga goes on like forever
