Hello. I was currently reading the manual and it stated a few wep/wpa i could use to secure my connection with all my wireless aplliances; such as notebooks. I want a wpa that is configure for family use only. I'll list the following below and if i missed any which should be used please do tell me;
64-bit WEP encryption
128-bit WEP encryption
WPA-PSK (no server)
If further information is needed about my computer/notebooks or any questions please give me a reply back, thanks.

lol, I don't really get what this post is about. Though, I can tell you that it doesn't really matter whether if it's your family or your friends who are going to be using your wireless router. In the end, all of them will need a password to be properly connected to the router if you want to be protected from the outsiders who may be stealing your bandwidth. In the order you list the configurations, it starts out from a weak encryption to a stronger one. However, As it gets stronger, it'll require more work for your router and thus will slow the performance. So not only you should only think about who you're setting the router up for, but also consider who else might be using the router without permission and what you're sacrificing.
My Linksys WRT54GC has other security modes:
Not really different, actually it's the same, but with my router, it's WPA Personal (which is the same as WPA-PSK. and as in personal mode, it's not in enterprise mode). WPA2 Personal, which is a newer stronger encryption than WPA. WPA2 Mixed Mode, which means that WPA and WPA2 can be used together. Though, I think that will really take a lot of load on your router.

I wonder why not you use MAC address filters for your security and set the max number of connection to the number of computers in your house that uses it? I am doing that currently and no one has been hacking me so far. _________________ Innocent Tranquility

Oooh, good one Jsy3k. MAC address filtering does improve security and it also comes with most of the routers. But there's a reason why this feature is off by default. Frist of all, it requires a bit of effort trying to figure out what MAC addresses each client have and then add em to a list as compared to setting up a pass and have each client use the key. Second, hackers could "spoof" one of the MAC addresses from your clients list through software and your router will not hesitate to let the hacker be in your network. This is easier done than cracking an encrypted password. I'd recommend this [MAC address filtering] as an add-on to add another layer of security. Good thing your neighours aren't smart. or so I hope ^_^;.

Well, in the end, I usually turn off my wireless router when I did not use it so that solves the problem of hacker trying to access my router unless the person is so persistent (crosses finger) that he monitors my online time. And usually, I am the only one using so I set the max connection to 1 unless my uncle wanted to connect. That way, I will know whether people will be hacking to my router or not _________________ Innocent Tranquility
