| Been keen in starting a project to design a katana or at least to do some calculations on paper. Anybody here had experience on designing one or close to making one? Care to share info.?? |

I happen to collect katanas, and have a fairly extensive knowledge about modeling and history, and I also took about a year of kendo.
But if you are talking about anime swords I have no knowledge except what I have watched.
Which were you interested in? |

I can say that anime has, in its own way, made me interested in the weapon, the real one of course. I've been searching around in the net for articles on the physics involved in swordmaking, but to no avail. So, I was just wandering if you may know about such resources.
The goal is to at least complete the paper work (material selection,..calculations..forging processes..technical drawings...etc.) before trying my hands on the actual swordmaking process,...that is if I can make it that far. So..that's what I have in mind. |

Yess!! Efforts finally paid off. ..found an e-book that covers the physics of bladed weapons. Browsed through but no sign of katanas,..but I think it should be worth reading. At least it got the ball rolling..
And..thank you for those wikipedia links. Loved them all especially the sword of Gou Jian. When I first saw it, thought it was some fantasy made real item.
okay..now back to reading... |

That's some MAJOR investments you would need to make. You should probably try a class or something first. |

haha..very true. THat's why everything has to start on paper. Some cost estimation for the tools and materials involved should give a rough plan.
Putting the project aside,...have you ever imagined how an Eastern blade/swordsman fair againts their Western counterparts in a duel? |

I would have to say an Easterner would win. This is of course not counting fencing, as that would be impossible to decide. It is a well known fact that in europe, the majority of the swords were made of very impure metals. This was not an option in Japan, seeing as the very little metal there was was very pure. As well as that, most midevil swords were simply cast into a shape, not layered with different types of metal, like a katana. This makes it a possiblility that katanas being razor sharp, could actually destroy their european opponents weapons putting the technique aside.
Also, due to it's weight a european sword would be much slower than a katana as well as the fact that japanese sword styles are faster to begin with. The european would be carved to bits.

No. By nature most broadswords and the like are slow, heavy and poorly made. |

That doesn't mean it can't be cool. Joking aside, I think you made a good point omitting fencing. I did two semester of fencing while in University. And from my understanding of sword fighting, it would make one crazy fight.
Purely for the style, I really like arabian sword.

Now all you have to do is take the knife off the arabian sword and attach it to a shotgun. It's a sword and a gun in 1 ! _________________ [img:400:140:a13d904028]http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r8/bigdave_89/Created%20Banners/Dark_Magician_Girl_Sig2.jpg[/img:a13d904028] |
