Learning Japanese by watching Anime is nearly impossible. It often happens that the Subbing Group's translations aren't really accurate, or that you missheard what the characters said, so you'll just end with a bad translation of the word.
I think its hard too, unless you watch it all day and night, like my friend. We are both taking the same beginners japanese class at school, and she also happens to be one of those that watch anime until her eyes pop out. Its amazing how much she knows and she can say sentences that we haven't learned yet......yes, we're not very progressive.....so I would consider her a genius and a bit of a obsesser at the same time.
I think by watching anime you can learn jap faster than a reading book,,,, because...People can remember sounds with moving pictures' longer and better than words with no movement at all,,,,,,also if we didn't concentrate so much on the subtitles then, i think we would be better at Jap... people who have good memories can only learn jap from books.. I tried reading an eng book that teaches u jap...and it was for beginners,,,it taught me zink(eng word for nothing....all who thought zink was a japanese word.....ROFL at u)
..btw, if ur too lazy to buy or rent a book here is a site that teaches u how to write jap....(at least i think it does!)
http://www.freejapaneselessons.com/
....there is another site that teaches how to speak jap, word by word and with sound in it ..but i forgot the site ^.^''..i'll try to remember or find the site... _________________ -If you can take all the nose-bleeds than come to the Ecchi Battle'Z

I'll agree that it is impossible to LEARN Japanese just by watching anime, but as ThaMahin said, it certainly helps.
I, Myself have watched several hundreds hours of anime these last 2 years and when I started doing some quizzes on http://iteslj.org/v/j/ I got about 50% of the words correct. If you know nothing at all you'd probably get like 25%, but after that I started to listen more to the language than reading the subtitles while watching anime, and I also got a book called "Learning japanese for busy people" or something, and after that I've really picked up a lot, I get like 66%-70% correct on the "Commonly Used Words quiz"
I still have a looong way to go, but I can almost speak as a 2-4 year old now, Got a base of about 250+ words or so, but still have a hard time forming sentances.

I find myself hearing anime when I watch raws and understanding a lot of it. I can't speak it, my friends who are actually studying the language laugh at me.
But hey, I can't afford lessons. And to get pronunciation, you need some feedback, eh?
Basically watching anime won't help much in learning japanese but if u have learn basic stuff about japanese language. watching anime could help in your listening skill abit thats what i guess helps me improve in my listening skill
Yeah, I'd say Japanese lessons are the best way to go. My Japanese teacher, even though he's from New York, stayed in Japan for 8 years and got married there. I've learned a lot in one hour in the class than I did from anime. I still would watch fansubs to help reinforce what you have learned, though.
I'll say watch a lot of anime and be an animaniac like me and you'll eventually learn a few words or at least be able to make sentence fragments. But i still cant read though.
Like other ppls said It's impossible to learn japanese from just watching anime because sometimes fansub groups have different translations and not totally accurate. Am fan of the whole japan culture to point that I wanna learn
the language. The ironic thing is I don't even know a lot of my own culture let alone the language. (am filipino ) If anyone in here really are serious and hardcore about learning japanese then heres some tips.
- Take classes at your high school or college if you have them there.
- It doesn't hurt if you know a friend who knows how to speak japanese(plus if he is japanese)
- Find resources online like sites , books , audio etc. . .
- Go to you local library and see if they have any videos, audio tapes , or even books to teach japanese
- Like learning any language it takes pratice and time unless your a super genius who can pick yup things like languages fast then you one lucky mofo !
Does all this help you? YES? Me¿ Since am bz w/ school and the college am going to now don't even have it as a class am learning at home with some audio lessons I found online when I have time. But am planing to take japanese classes at this other college next semester.
The audio lessons I found is called " Pimsleur's Japanese Audio Lessons " It basically teaches you the basics you need to survive in Japan if you are there on a trip etc... Like to get directions and other stuff am barely on lesson 4 lol so I don't know what else they teach you. It's about 1.24 gigs. 30 mins a lesson and its 90 lessons. If you guys really want to learn then am willing to share this since I found this on BT on Suprnova.org but if you heard the news then u should noe that its shut down. If someone here is willing to give me tutorial how to create a torrent am willing to share it here and place to upload the torrent. Am runnin on dsl at 40-45 kb upload and I leave my comp on at night for a good 10 hours good enough to share 1 gig of data. So people just let me know and also THE PPLS in charge of ANIMESOURCE if you want it.

yeah i agree about this too.. it's almost around 1-5% probabilitiees to learn japanese. the only sure thing is that you can learn some few words and it's meaning
I imagine that anime would be a good tool to get an ear for the language. It won't exactly help you learn it all by itself, but it would be good practice. From all the anime I've watched, I've mostly learned swear words and various exclamtions.
