uhh...if you want to learn Japanese, I suggest you take a class.
Only after you know the basics (actually once you become semi-fluent) then should you watch anime (without subtitles) to polish your skills and pick up colloquialisms that really wouldn't be taught in class.

i think your right as well. But if your interested in learning a couple of words ( like me ^__^) then theres no harm done in watching the subtitles as they speak. I learned a couple of words from naruto but i wont dare say them cause i dont know how to spell it!!

I learned a few japanese by watching subtitled animes.but first you must know some basics too,like...
a simple sentence: I'm stupid=watashi wa baka desu
watashi=I
wa=I don't what it really is but it looks like some sort of conjunction
baka=stupid
desu=it's used to end a sentence and it it state that the sentence is true
i'm not a stupid=watashi wa baka dewarimasen
dewarimasen=also for anding a sentence but it state that the sentence is not true or rather false
IMO it's better to find a teacher or at least a grammar book to study. And start learning keigo (honorific language) because it's easier.
Once you have a good knowledge you may start studying informal language and then animes and mangas will be useful. Informal language is much harder because you don't have to make complete sentences and you have to understand what someone is saying by the context. Sometimes someone says only one word and it needs to be translated to English as a huge phrase.
Also there are words and grammar structures that need to be used according to your gender and age. And this is only the beginning.
wow trying to learn Japanese from anime, I wouldn't say it's impossible but that's gonna take a lot of time hehe I mean it's easy to pick up some words from watching anime.

The basic principle as to why watch anime helps one learn Japanese, though I wouldn't say it can make you fluent by any chance, is that it's a simulated version of being immersed in the language. Yes, you can study for years and you usually need to, but that's a big point in going to another country--hearing native speakers speak in everyday situations in everyday accents. Now, for those of us who can't afford to travel, anime is a good example of pronunciation (oftentimes) and how things are commonly used. Plus, if you're good at pattern recognition and you take similar sentences, patterns, looking at the differences can help you to understand why the structure works the way it does and what the words are. So it's not a sure-fire way, or the best way, but it does help. I may not be able to have huge conversations, but after 6+ years of anime, I can at least understand things like this http://www.megatokyo.com/index.php?strip_id=716 when I need to. (I had a few words off from translations I've seen, but from what I've learned I knew what she was saying). _________________ One of the old fogies of A-S. Sheesh. I'm not even old.
If you REALLY want to learn Japanese, first go here.
Is an essay someone wrote as a joke (so PLEASE don't get offended by it....), but it highlights many things that you might want to know before making the long term goal of learning Japanese....
And if you still want to learn Japanese after reading it, here is how you should do it (80% chance of working):
STEP I:
Learn how to read and write Katakana and hinagana (don't care how you do it, just learn them), then learn a thing called romaji (very easy to learn, 2 hr at most), romaji will help you say Japanese (but you still should learn hinakanas and katakanas first), typing Japanese on computer, and learning new word.
(don't care about the kanji for now, that is what Japanese dictionary are made for)
STEP II:
Get a privet tutor (girlsfriend/boyfriend/other friends/books will NOT DO), a small group might work, but it is best to get an 1 on 1 lesson. Do this for 1 to 2 years untill you have a good enough knowledge on Japanese grammar, rules (culture), and know few Japanese word. (If you can't find a good privet tutor or don't want to pay, school class will do, but you need to study really hard)
(Privet tutors are good for the first few years because, they will make sure you learn the basics, since you are paying for them....)
STEP III:
Now your life gets much easier
You can continure taking privet lessons or just do school classes, and can even just read those books, just find some way of practicing Japanese and expanding your vocabulary.
And here is a good news, Japanese ONLY invented about 100 words in the whole Japanese language , all other millions of words are taken from some other language, which mean that you already know the meanings of 1000's Japanese words (romaji will help you write them and say them in Japanese)
If you work hard enough, before you know it, you should able to understand, read, speak, and write (in this order) Japanese, and the whole process takes 3 to 5 years. _________________

It kinda helps to watch anime and learn Japanese. I take Japanese and some words come up that I know right away because I watch Anime. But then again, you do not learn much. Just watch it for the enjoyment
hey zeggy you posted something very interesting ( i read the "joke" as well..), i never thought that japanese would be so hard to learn.
I started w/ the vocabulary (animes..), then began to read romaji on openings and endings (of animes again^^), and now i'm learning the hinagana only with animes and compter programs that translates romaji to hinagana (very useful).. I know i won't be able to have a good level that way, but it's the easier way. After all, w/ all the anime i watch knowing this language can be avoided, even if i won't use japanese (maybe for RAWs only), i think learning is fun and interesting.
