What router are you using (if any)? Or do you have Windows XP's firewall on or a third-party software like Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, or anything alike?
Access your router with a web browser by putting this in the address bar: http://192.168.1.1
You or your guardian should know the password to get in. Once you're in, go click on Applications & Gaming. There, is the place where you can forward your ports (Not open. There shouldn't be a router out there that would let you open ports as it is not safe). Ports that are usually used for torrents range from 6881 to 6899. The protocol should be in TCP. Port forwarding only allows the ports to be forwarded to one client only. So whoever this client is, let's say your computer, go to your Windows's Start menu, Run.., type in cmd and hit enter. Type in: ipconfig, and use the given IP Address (should be something like 192.168.1.xxx) for your port forwarding setup. Make sure the box for "Enabled" section is checked.
In Zone Alarm Pro, in the Program's Listing, click on the program's name like btdownloadgui.exe, then click the Options button and then enter the ports to use. Also, make sure that you have turned off Windows XP's firewall. You can find this from your Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, then Network Connections. Right click on the connection you're using, choose properties, and then turn the firewall protection off from the Advance tab, if I remember right..
