I remember this was announced like a year ago on April 1 and everyone thought it was a joke. I grew up on Cartoon Network (before Adult Swim became the only good thing on there) so I was a childhood fan of The Powerpuff Girls and I was excited to hear it was being turned into an anime. Besides, it's a good punch in the face for people who think America is the only one that steal animation material from Japan.
The anime wasn't completely bad to me. It's mostly because I was expecting a childish cartoon like this and also because it's a refreshing retelling of The Powerpuff Girls with a mahou shoujo touch on it. It grew on me quickly. Another thing I noticed was how they did the background work similar to the original artwork. Kinda childish and simple without too much detail.
Worth the watch if you're an old time fan. _________________
Harvest Moon Anime, coming as soon as soon as someone realizes it'll be a good ass anime!
It was a fun little romp. I wouldn't call it the Powerpuff Girls, since the similarities really stop at the names and a few gags. But it's still one of the better mahou shoujo offerings in the last few years. Sure, it's goofy and light and aimed at young kids (which it's supposed to be), but it has a real feeling of personality to it. In my book, that's all it needs. I think most of the show's weight will come from its character interactions. Once the premise is laid down and the characters all get in one place, it's real potential, for good or ill, will be more obvious. Even the fights felt more like excuses for the girls to be goofy with Mojo Jojo.
Also, I find the ending sequence absolutely friggin' adorable. Mojo looks strangely appropiate with a tumbler of cognac.
