hi everyone, i am pretty much new to anime, i have watched over the years some like saint saiya, altough i didn't know the real name until like two or three months ago, so i need to understand how it all works, i have heard about anime, manga, hentai, and so many other names that i don't understand, but i don't know the difference, i have watched Inuyasha (only two movies), DearS (only 6 episodes), Chobits (27 episodes), but i don't know what to really look for, or what's the difference in some of them. so can everyone just give me my first "Anime for dummys" leason please, i really appreciate it, like i said i am new to this stuff, but i already like it alot, i want more, more!!!!!

Let's see then
Anime = Animated movies, so basicly just cartoon
Manga = Graphic novel, with other words kind of like a comic book
Hentai = Animated porn
The diffrence between anime series is pretty simple. It's like any tv show they all differ depending on who makes them and what genre etc they're in. Anime is mearly a way of media and there's lots of diffrent kinds of anime in every genre.
If you want to know what people recommend you can always check these two threads.
there is also a general division of a type of anime.
shounen and shoujo.
shounen being like Dragonball Z (fighting)
and shoujo being like ichigo 100% love affairs and not really concentrated on fighting. _________________

This may be random but I needed to ask this few month back
OVA means Original Video Animation
Which also means(correct me if I'm wrong) that it has no connection to the main story. Again I'm only going off memory
Not necessarily... usually OVAs are extentions of the original tv series run (like Love Hina or Ichigo 100%). They may add to the story, but they're usually not important to its development or outcome. More like a ploy to make more money off a popular series that has already ended. Also, some series are ONLY classified as OVAs, like Nurse Witch Komugi, Magical Play and Iriya's Sky; Summer's UFO.
And jsyk, OAV means essentially the same thing... some people get confused. Related... feature length movies are typically the same thing, but with an incredible amount more detail, like the Ghost in the Shell movies, Metropolis, and anything by Miyasaki.
To segue on the topic of length, it's important to know how the length of a series will affect the story. Most animes are given a budget based on how popular the producers think the synopsis will be. Some mega-huge series are given more "open-ended" storylines and thus have 200, 300, 400+ episode... like Pokemon, Naruto, and Inuyasha. Other series are given strict storylines and a timeline in which they need to come to a conclusion. Series can run either 12 or 13 episodes (half-run), 24 25 or 26 episodes (full run) or even 52 episodes long (double season). These series are more like soap operas... it's better to consider them as being one 3 or 6 hour long episode as opposed to 13 or 26 or whatever length seperate episodes.
Of course, "story-less" series exist in which the episodes don't really connect. Series like Galaxy Angel, Excel Saga, and yes, even Cowboy Bebop and some episode of GITS Standalone Complex are kinda just "filler"-type stories that don't contribute to anything but character development and the like.
Another important element is the genre, which is something some people don't seem to understand. When you say you want to watch "anime," a lot of non-fans tend to think that's "just pokemon or porn." Obviously that's not true. Anime is a MEDIUM just like live-action tv and cinema. The genres within the medium breakdown pretty much the same:
- action
- drama
- science fiction
- romance
- comedy
- slice of life (more reality-based than cartoony, though most anime these days are)
- or any combination of the choices listed above
anyway, that's what I got for now. I'll let other people chime in and I'll comment off those posts later. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I often use it in a positive way........then again, I love harems.....>__<
Harem:
A genre of anime where the male protoganist is usualy shased by several female characters...with various degrees of affection towards him. Usualy obvious who the male will end up with, thought not always (example: Shuffle! or Ichigo 100%)
so could anyone give me names like Chobits, i read some where it says what to watch, but it's really general, i would like to find a list where they say like what type is it and a full list of all of them, even if they don't say a description. how do i contact the administrators? i don't ever know when it is an administrator and when it's not. hmm, maebe i can get points for the suggestion, a full list of the types of anime with all the existing ones under that type.

fan service
Anything used to please the audience that has nothing to do with the show.
In anime, this is a "code word" for things like panty shots, close up of busts, etc. usually when the audience is predominately male.
Not only peep-ish views of females, but also drawn-out action scenes, mecha assemblage sequences, and magical transformation sequences. Though they are a trademark and long-standing staple of the anime medium, in many cases they are solely eye-candy and thus classified as "fanservice"... yes, I was surprised myself when I found out ^_^ _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
