Hey guys, hope i can get some opinion on this...
I'm looking to purchase a external hard drive between 100-300 gb, but i don't know which brand i should get that is the most reliable. Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe Maxtor or Seagate but then the sales represenative suggested the brand "Lucie." Anyone know about this brand?

maybe you mean "LaCie." I don't know much about them, but you can read reviews of their products from here: http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4566-3186_16-0.html?filter=1000036_24407_ . User reviews are pretty reliable so make sure to read them! Seagate makes by far the best quality hard drives out there. Maxtor comes to next. Also, Seagate bought Maxtor so you may be buying an identical item lol. For external hard drives, Maxtor seems to be popular.

If you're looking for a reliable external hard drive then I suggest you should purchase one from Seagate. Like thugangel said they do have the best quality hard drives. I'm unsure about Lucie/laCie.

Hope that this is helpful to you poiurewqfdsa. =]

thanx guys. according to the sales represenative, Lacie uses seagate hard drives but it has no fan since it's aluminum cased instead of plastic. He said that aluminum cases can dissipate the heat better?

I dunno about that, but Seagate External HDDs have more ventilation than other External HDDs. So it's much more cooler^^.

And I myself am using a Seagate HDD. (and I opened my OLD Seagate External HDD and see what was inside^^)

Surely, transferring the heat to aluminum is much easier. And surely it'll be much quieter but it's pretty much pointless if the heat has no where else to go. You need another source for the heat to go. The air in the room would pick up the heat from the aluminum, but not fast enough compared to a fan blowing on the metal. Another source could be another type of fluid; liquid. Water cooling has also gotten popular, but it requires more money and usually aimed towards modders.

So you can get the LaCie w/ aluminum casing and have a fan blow on it or you can get a different brand that already has a fan or two built into the casing.

Heres a Western Digital for $149:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136001

Western Digital is also a pretty good brand.

You could also always just build your own external drive its pretty easy and cheap also. As for Maxtor HD's, unless they are using Seagate hardware nowadays, stay away. Maxtor has always been known for failing, just ask around in any tech forums.

you bought two external hard drives? lol, anyway, Maxtor 3200 seems to have good reviews from what I've read so far ( http://stores.tomshardware.com/rating_getprodrev.php/product_id=17933509/id_type=M// ). Hard drives don't catch on fire so from what you've read, the person may be lying. The only way they could catch on fire is if you pour gasoline on it and lit it or make it sit on top of water and short circuit it. If it's an internal hard drive and you incorrectly plugged the connection from the power supply to the hard drive, then surely the hard drive will get burnt. Since external hard drives only needs to be connected through USB or Firewire, this shouldn't be a problem.

uh...actually, i bought 3 Confused the other one is a Western Digital "little black book" 160 GB. I was going to keep two of them since right now there's crazy rebate on them so might as well just stock up right? Very Happy Hmm...now i really don't know which one to keep. Sorry about my indecisiveness...

I couldn't even afford one! lol. Well, anyway good luck in choosing. Your best bet would be the Seagate and the Western Digital. But if the Maxtor is bigger in capacity compared to Seagate, then keep the Maxtor. That's just my opinion o_o;.
