Well, The Ring was popular(though its a novel and it popularized by the movie trilogy)
The horror genre of Japan was popular even in the states and even here in Asia(especially here in the Philippines) but I dont seen any anime or manga that have horror/suspense theme. There are some, but only few.
There are a lot of scary mangas out there... Yes I think I saw The Ring manga in some bookstore somewhere~
Hmmm... I've read Goth and it is a bit scary. It is about a guy that met a strange girl in school and they went on together to solve mysteries. Haha, I still have goosebumps remembering the things horrible crimes and massacres they had to solve...
I think the reason they're so few is because not many people like the genre. Comedy + ecchi + romance or action + magic + battles are the rave in manga plots right now. Plus, it's kinda difficult to come up with a scary plot, and mangas are better suited to be fun and wholesome. _________________ EX-mod

I don't know if Berserk would fit into this genre. It's more of an action manga the more you think about it. But I know that one was pretty populare when it first came out.
i dont know, its probably because the content warrants a much mature audience, thus, a smaller target market. thats only my opinion, though.
I've read GOTH, though. And i find it absolutely good and absolutely unsatisfying because of its single-volume release. BAH! if i were the manga, I would have developed a plot that would have run a bit longer. But then again, doing that might lessen the impact of the story. I still think, however, that it should have a sequel.
