Now I realized this when Im actually debating in anime a cartoon? thread.
These are so far the animes that for me have real MATURE and have SERIOUS story:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Elfen Lied
Cowboy Bebop
Serial experimen Lain
Now and Then Here and There
While most of them are... JUST ANIMES, I sometimes watch it, I sometimes dont. Simply because there are blood, cursing, death, occult things and anything doesnt mean that it have matured or serious story either.
I like Spawn, Batman the Animated series, Spiderman the mid 90's version and the Uncanny X-Men, Spawn and wild C.A.T.S. because I know what the creator of these cartoons wants to express...
Uncanny X-Men- About discrimination because only of our differences.
Spiderman- About what the hero is really fighting for, since his uncle Ben died because of him so he wants to make up for that by doing good and be a hero. But what for? Thats what he is aiming for...
Batman the animated series- His parents died because of a criminal, and because of that he dont want that happen again, so Bruce Wayne became a vigilante. And yet, the past still hunts him because he cant protect the ones he love...
But what about animes? Is there a common theme in them?
Flame of Recca- Kurei have terrible past, he wants revenge on what did this to him and thats Recca. He wants to kill Recca. Recca, a playful teenager and suddenly came up with a mess with Kurei and then Yanagai Sakaoshita, and then Tokiya Mikagami wants to revenge because her sister died, and then Fuuko Kurisawa, and then, STOP! Its just too complicated and yet what we only seen are fights, fights, and more fights. Why are they fighting anyway? Whats the purpose? I DONT KNOW. Atleast they have violence, blood and killer moves!
Yuyu Hakusho- again, I dont know what the heroes are fighting or what are there purpose be. There's no common theme and what we've seen from beginning to end are just fighting. I even dont know why this became mature or serious. Is it just because the graphical representation of violence?
Naruto- OK, why most main characters in the show have dark and terrible past/childhood? Whats the creator here implying? That most japanese have dark and terrible childhood? Anyway, what we always seen in the show though are just fighting ninjas and flashbacks and talk, talk, talk...
Atleast most cartoons today have common theme and their humor can be funny even for adults.
Jenny the Teenage Robot- a life between a superhero and just being an ordinary girl. And about a girl who wants to belong with normal kids.
The fairly Oddparents- A life of a elementary student geek, and the life of a ordinary boy itself, only with comic humor, fairys and slapstick humor...
Jimmy Neutron- Sometimes, even geniuses have faults on them and they also want to have fun. Thats why most of the cause of dangers in their town are caused by him. And sometimes geniuses are human too.
Dexter's laboratory- a child genius was still a child in heart you know, even though they have more IQ and intellegence of an ordinary adult.

there are actually a lot of anime with serious mature storyline
I really hate cartoon because most of them hardly have a decent storyline and they just drift until the end _________________
Be the Ultimate Ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today!
Thats the main problems about animes though. TOO SHORT and more story oriented, Im sorry to say this, but its really a bad business for them since most animes only lasts 1 to 2 years, that wasnt enough to cater audiences. The only people who can actually access REAL ANIMES, like we do today are the ones who uses internet because of fansubs and the one who can afford DVDS every week. Unless you're into piracy but piracy is bad...
Sorry to say this, but episodic cartoons are also good, since you can still know whats going on even you've missed couple of episodes. BESIDES, cartoons are also story oriented, only in episodic form...

I agree with Black_Wraith, there are animes with serious mature storylines. It's just you need to re-watch the anime to understand it. Personally done it to Flame of Recca, Gundam Wing and the Full Metal Panic Series(FMP, Fumoffu and TSR) _________________

I can agree that the Gundam series except SEED have a matured storyline. Atleast its not one of those mecha themed animes with super robots built into them even in the 90's, like Combatler V, Gheto Robo, Raijin Oh and Gosaurer.
But I doubt Flame of Recca and I didnt watch full metal panic yet. Flame of recca was just full of fights with dark past thrown into it... And for the fact that I even read the manga and finished it. Atleast the fighting sequences are great...
I can agree a bit about Flame of Recca. I totally agree with the Gundam series but SEED have a matured storyline. SEED is like a watered down version of the Gundam series.
Check out Full Metal Panic then Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid. _________________

Is that a robot anime in Hero TV? I know you know HERO TV, you're from the Philippines, right? Anyway, I just dont like their dubbing in that anime so I cant stand to watch it...
Yup, I'm from the Philippines. I know HERO TV, their dubbing really sucks. It's mecha is called Arm-Slaves, if you heard this term, this is it. _________________

I can second Full Metal Panic saga. Especially Full Metal Panic, The Second Raid (but not Fumoffu?).
And I want to add these to the "mature" anime list.
Honey and Clover - A slice of life anime, but this one dealing with those who are stepping into the boots of adulthood. Although the characters and the antics are not realistic, the problems that were dished out are.
Monster - Hooo... Mindf**k all the way. If you are into reading thriller/crime books and watching that kind of a movie, then Monster is the best anime for you. 70 episodes long, and in some point might get draggy, but it's worth it.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - Another thriller/crime anime. If you like the anime that's messing up your mind, or you are in your detective shoes and feel like Sherlock Holmes, try out this anime and try to figure out what happens in all the arc. It might not fits your definition of mature/serious though. (Want to try proving your Distinction anyone? Just three will be enough )
Mushishi - Deals with what we thought was obvious, and twist it in a mystical way. If you are into supernatural, believe in "that other world", or just wants a refreshing standpoint of the things we do today, this one for you. _________________ ...

no! anime is cartoon period. k thanks. you want to see something mature go watch a movie, but animes can only get so serious... a mature anime is still an anime and that itself causes the viewer to take the messages in a skeptic fashion so, NO. anime is no mature. i watch it for entertainment like many of you and not for the "deep messages" some may try to put into them.
Carol>>> No, my sig is from Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen.. This is a screenshot of Kenshin himself. Here is a pic of the protagonist of Full Metal Panic.
it looks similar though, katsuhiro. Anyway, I agree with ironstove though, if you want with serious story, go watch a movie or even watch a TV series. Animes are just there for the entertainment of the audiences like cartoons themselves.
It must not have involve mature or serious stories.
I never seen those animes though, mistabean. I think its too mature for mainstream audiences...
