wow, copyrights huh? um well lessee......................
the copyrights would be on the anime's homepage in japan if u can find it and it would be on the providers home page in the u.s. for example burst angel (^_^) is copyrighted by viz videos so u can find the copyrights for it there.
of course what u can do is watch the fansubs, those are free and if they're still on the net then the copyright claims have not caught up with em. and they are completely legal unless u do something with em then its not.
anyway other ppl correct me if i'm wrong _________________ ALL HAIL LELOUCH
so it should be ok to download fasubs from the net as long as i don't do stuff like trying to sell them?
that would be nice, cause there's some people over here who have actual anime stores where they sell fansubs, those bad puppies!!

stores that sell fansubs? or do you mean bootlegs? If they're selling fansubs, then not only would any license-holder be miffed, but the fansub groups themselves might get a little ticked off. I know I would be.
Anyway, regarding what's licensed and what's not, there is no like Official Perveyor of Anime License Monitoring or master list or something, but a few websites maintain very up-to-date and accurate listings.
- www.animenewsnetwork.com : you can just search for a title and depending on what color and font the title is displayed as, you can figure out what's licensed and what's not (I think blue (as opposed to light blue) means licensed, then there's bold and italic and all that.. there's a key to figure it out). Also, clicking on the title will give you info on companies including license-holders other than the original japanese companies, if any
- www.animeondvd.com : plenty of disc reviews... so obviously if you see a review for an r1, you know it's been licensed. They also keep good tabs on what's due out soon. Also, check here (http://www.animeondvd.com/licenselist/) for listings by title and listings by date, plus another list of titles currently waiting to be picked up
of course, these are all for Region 1 licenses. A-Source is a website with a more-than-usual international showing, so you may have to do a little more investigating if you live anywhere other than the US and Canada. And as I always say, be sure to support the industry by buying the legitmate title releases of the series you love. If a dvd copy LOOKS shady, then it is ^_^ _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

::bows:: thank you, thank you. I try my best at sharing the vast knowledge locked up in my gigantic head... oh wait... I'm really just a super-computer floating in space trying to mask my identity
and in regards to just downloading... I still prefer to buy the DVDs over downloading. I don't know what it is, I just like having a big shiny dvd collection decorating my room. Plus extras always make nice supplements to series. DVDs are getting cheaper, even the legit ones, haha. Try Best Buy and Walmart for the national chains, but basically any of the local chain-stores are dependable (not foolproof though, I'm sure a couple buyers have been duped before). _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
we have a wal mart, but no best buy, i am in Mexico, i know that when i go to the States i do see good stuff in best buy. and about the anime stores over here, yes i am sure they are selling fansubs, i've seen one that someone from school bought, and it still has that message fansubs have about the license and about fans. i guess i'll have to do a big search for the real dvd's, i haven't heard of any places that actually have them other than those fansubs stores i've mentioned.
