I don't think much of you guys have even heard of Summon Night before (if you have, kudos to you). Simply put, it's just another one of the many game series that was released only in Japan and never making it to U.S.
However, Swordcraft Story, along with its sequel, is practically the only game to have made it. It was released in Japan back in April 2003, then Atlus (who also published Riviera: The Promised Land) translated and published it later for the U.S., releasing the game just last July.
Anyways, focusing more on the game itself...
As the game starts off, you're given the choice of whether your character will be a boy or a girl. Soon afterwards, you learn that your character has a role as a Craftknight (combination of Blacksmith and a Swordknight. Basically a knight that can forge his own weapons =P), training and learning the art of being a Craftlord under supervision of a master swordsmith. Wanting to follow your deceased father's footsteps as a Craftlord, you participate in the city's fighting tournament, where the victor is granted your fathers position of Craftlord.
A few things however, you'll need an actual weapon to use in the tournament (and all you have is a forging hammer) so you have to gather up materials that you'll find in the labyrinth located just beneath the town. Of course, when there's a labyrinth, there's monsters. The side-scrolling battle system for Swordcraft Story is extremely similar to that of Namco's 'Tales' series, so if you're fimilar with it, then you should have no problem with the fighting.
There's much much more to what I just explained about the game (I didn't even mention the characters...), but anymore typing and I think this thread would go bad.
There are now new versions of Summon night: swordcraft history
The most recent i saw has already bows, but i never tried them...
Anyway the game is great, and also unique i guess!
well i played the jap fersion for sometime before
but now i'm just plainly bored with it
since i like tales better _________________ Haruhi: "Crab is a no-no. Picking the flesh out of the shell drives me nuts. Why crabs make their shells hard? How come they evolve like that?"

i finished this game within 1 week and 2 day flat including all the secret floor plus all list of wepons tha i created
and also i bought the version to of this which is
summon night sword craft stroy 2
and gues wat you get to ride a gundam in this second version but only in the big boss battle and the secret area battle though but still it is soooo cool _________________
personaly i loved both games the fighting style is some times a little clunky but it had a lot of value besides. for example i like the fact i lkike teh fact u can make your own wespons. i thought taht was sick shit!
i also liked how there wre like 17 million endings.
well the second one does looks good
(i like that one better)
but it was missing the auto battle that is there in
summon night:hajimari no ishi
it makes the leveling easier and less boring
well over all i still like it
though after starocean and tales of _________________ Haruhi: "Crab is a no-no. Picking the flesh out of the shell drives me nuts. Why crabs make their shells hard? How come they evolve like that?"
