Nerd: According to Whatis.com, nerds are people of above-average intelligence who place little importance on their appearance. Nerds are often aware of their status, but they don't mind. In fact, many take pride in the putdown, as it means they're smart and not wrapped up in superficial worries.
Geek: Geek is a more specific term. Back in the day, geeks worked at carnivals, and (according to the dictionary) "bit the heads off live chickens." Thankfully, the term now has a different connotation. Like nerds, geeks are smart, but they tend to focus more on technology. As Urban Dictionary explains, these are the people you make fun of in high school and later work for as an adult.
Dork: Being called a "dork" is the biggest insult of the three. There's no way you can spin it into something positive. After all, even the dictionary writes that dorks are "stupid" people. And to make matters worse, dorks assume they're cool. Oh, and they smell, too.
so what's it gonna be? _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

well, those headlines only stay up for so long... plus not everyone here goes to yahoo frequently.
anyway... I'm a nerd since I like to classify myself as higher-than-normal intelligent and I usually don't care about my appearance. I wish I could a geek, but I don't know much about technology. Just ask Kaiser and the hell I put him through trying to understand HTML coding and FTP servers... I FINALLY got my new review coded, only took a full three weeks, haha. (Expect it on the homepage this weekend.) _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

"Much of the revisionist image of geeks started in the mid-to-late 1990s and originated mostly with Hollywood celebrities, genre hipsters, and advertising spinwizards. However, this revisionism does not correct the negative stereotypes associated with geeks. Nor does it necessarily seriously address the established positive aspects, such as high intelligence or special talents. It often ignores the notion that above average intelligence or techincal aptitude is a traditional prerequisite. Many of the highly popularized geek interests are more pop culture or entertainment orieinted as opposed to science or technical disciplines where intelligence and serious committment is required. Most importantly, it ignores the issue concerning the social ineptidude, alienation or loneliness experienced by many considered to be geeks. Instead, geek chic involves the affectation of selected, stereotypical geek traits, typically for the purpose of contriving a "fashionably quirky" or eccentric persona."
hahaha

I was looking up nerd and geek on Wikipedia and found a link to Why Nerds are Unpopular
It's very interesting and very easy to read.
I read a few other essays on the site. They are not only interesting, they are also useful.

quos> wow...he got some really good points there, actually got me thinking about school and society differently.
well i wasnt exactly a popular kid in school, getting good grades seemed to be another way to gain a certain statues (whether a good or bad one, i didnt mind, recognition was most important). but as the final year of school approach, i freaked out, cos i couldnt find my purpose (i dont think i have one still...) so i stopped applying myself in order to get my mind off it, and my grades dropped from tops to below average =/ i am an ex-nerd lol
and goddamn right hormones got nothing to do with it. _________________ "Look at me, with my pretty bracelet and tiara... I'm a fuckin' princess!"
