i went back and ask for a replacement for the dreamcast, this time i got one that's made in 1999 and in China instead of the previous one that's made in 2000 and Japan. On the one made in Japan, there's a "SD" written on the underside while the one made in China has a "WK" what's the difference?

I dunno. Mine is UD Made in Japan (1999). Maybe just to identify which factory it was manufactured from?

hmm...so does your dreamcast make a really weird, loud, pitched sound kinda like "shiiiiiizzzz" while playing? I was playin soul calibur on it and it only does it when the fight starts but when i'm in the title screen, i only hear a quiet, low pitched "duuuuuu" sound that i guess is normal since i hear the same thing from my PS2. Maybe older system makes more noise 'cus of tech.??? Shocked

Yeah, the loud scratching-like sound is normal coz of yes, old tech. It's produced by the moving lens. The old tech wasn't so bad, though. The disc holds about 1.2GB while a regular CD would hold only 700MB. Gamecube discs hold about 1.4GB if I remember right, but they came in the 128-bit generation war about 3 years after DC launched and was using a DVD-like format. There was a DVD drive replacement planned for Dreamcast but it didn't see the light of day because of financial problem.

I like the sound because I could tell that my Dreamcast is working hard and kicking.

I have two (that's right, read 'em and weep) Dreamcasts! Hooray for me!

...I am just kidding. But the Dreamcast really is the $#!T. Best system ever. Too bad I didn't get some ROMS for the games I wanted: KOF 99 dream match, grandia 2, shenmue.....

But a really good RPG on the Dreamcast would be Skies of Arcadia (remade on the GC). Also you guys should play Jet Grind Radio. Just so many good games (also a lot of bad games, but the amount of good games is more than enough- Samba de Amigo? Typing of the Dead?)

Anyway, I too had that problem with my Dreamcast. I would put in a disc and it would not load properly. It would say reading disc. If I told it to play, the machine would say "please insert disc." That was, of course, my used Dreamcast. That never happened with my "new" Dreamast.

My two Dreamcast have different dates printed on the back of the unit. I think one is October and one is Earlier (the used one). I think that affects the burnt games I can play.

Can anyone explain how burnt games are done? How can all that information be compressed onto a CD. 1 GB to 700 MB? How will the Dreamcast read? I really want to get Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. =)

They're bad games? Maybe they're just not your taste. Typing of the Dead is aimed towards people who wants to learn to type faster with a fun environment. A lot of people loved Samba de Amigo. So maybe it's just you?

Not all games uses the entire disc (there are games that are less than 400MB or 200MB). There are small ripping groups that would take out a couple of music sounds or movie scenes in order to fit them in a disc. Also, the GD-ROM has 1.2GB capacity so that they can fill in junks so a regular CD-ROM won't be able to read it. In order to back-up a GD-ROM, you must have a cable that would connect your Dreamcast to the computer. Then, with a proper software, you would copy the contents of the GD-ROM that's running in the console into the computer. Then convert it to an image file that would be burnt in a proper way or mode. There are games that are splitted up into multiple discs.

Your best bet is downloading the game or buy it.

Thanks for the explanation about how the games were copied.

Nobody, I mean nobody, who owns a Dreamcast would dare say those two games are bad. Perhaps they would say they don't love or hate those two games. In my post, my intention was to indicate that those games seemed to me to be excellent titles. I just never played them, but heard excellent reviews.
