How does one remote a computer, I would like to know so that I can help my cousin out, or anyone else out with occasional problems, as its is quite tiring to run two or three blocks just to spend 10-15 minutes fixing a small problem.
I am running on Windows Xp Home Edition Service Pack 2, my cousin, a Windows Media Center (or w/e it is, forgot what its called).

Thanks in advance XD

There's another method which is through VNC. I like VNC better since the set up is really easy. All that is pretty much needed to be done is install the VNC server on the computer you want to mess around with, put a password on it, maybe mess around with the settings, and open the port(s) that's needed. And then you can download a viewer or access the computer through a browser by going to http://<ip-address>:5900 (if the server has the java support enabled) anywhere around the world. What's also nice about this is that the person in front of the computer you're accessing to can see what you're doing and may have an understanding of what's going on.

It would be nice if the VNC server is included in the startup so the computer will be accessable again when rebooted. I'd recommend to try it on yourself first and master how things work and then you can tell your friend how to set it up, knowing what you're doing. I'd suggest Ultr@VNC. TightVNC is also nice.

I second the use of VNC, since it is extremely easy to use and I do not know whether you can install VNC directly into the client. From what I know, in LAN environment, you will just need the IP address of the user and then connect using their IP. The user will be prompted that VNC will be installed and then our server will install the client for them. After installing, you can just immediately help them remotely.

But, before you do something, a word of advice. Make sure that you do the setting so that it can only be accepted when the user gives the OK instead of using passwords. It can become a potential danger since hackers can use VNC and if they crack your password, they can enter your PC. So please use this only if you know what you are doing.

I hyperlinked Ultr@VNC and TightVNC. Same when I first mentioned VNC. I didn't make them underlined. I usually do, but I just wanted to see if people will figure it out since I'm wondering why links aren't underlined by default when it's embeded with the URL code. I got lazy.

lol, it's so simple you won't need a guide. Like I said, install it and play around with it so you will know what you're doing, just how a computer-fixer should be Very Happy. Take a look of this article and see what you're missing. And, remember, make sure that the computer you're trying to access to has the port 5800 or 5900 open or forwarded.

I was wondering if it is possible to remote your own computer, cause if you can't than I can't really play around with the program...

You don't have a LAN set up? Or no friends that have a computer and internet connection to try it on (by going to their house and then connect to your computer from there)?

It is possible to remote your own computer, but it's pretty messy because it's hard to control a computer that you're suppose to control from a different computer. I think you gotta have "Allow Loopback Connections" enabled. I know it works, because I've tried it on myself before on java (http://<ip address>:5900). Try it yourself and see why I'm saying that it's hard.

The easiest program to use would be logmein. Just go to logmein.com and register for a free account. Then go to the computer that you want to remote into and log into your logmein account and add the computer. After that you'll be able to remote into that computer from ANY computer with a web browser that has java. Works like a charm for me.
