I agree. Horrible movie. But then again it circle around that this movie was not actually a movie but actual videotape from something that actually happened. And they tried really hard to make that convincing, so people believed it for a while. Then on top of that, popular movies dont always mean they are actually GOOD. Then on top of that again, everyones opinions differ. One persons greatest movie ever may be the next mans worst movied of all time. People are just too sporadically different for generalizations like that to be take to heart. But anyways I agree with you. Horrible movie lol. _________________ Miku Miku!!

The reason this movie was so successful was the great ad campaign, it was viral marketing, which bases itself on word of mouth. I do not know if any of you are familiar with Alternative Reality Games, but they are a perfect example of viral marketing. Ex. The greatest ARG was the ilovebees campaign for Halo 2. Now I know I getting off on a tangent, however, this is all relevant. Essentially it was a world wide game that became extremely engrossing and allowed millions of people to play. In the end, it was just a campaign for Halo 2, but, one that had received mass press.
The same can be said for the Blair Witch Project. The way they marketed it, the fact that everyone who say said it was edgy, and it became one of those movies you had to see. I disagree with you guys, however, for the movie was pretty good. Coupled with the campaign and the movie they were very successful and it proves why so much money was generated. According to boxofficemojo.com the movie cost $60,000 to make, and generated $248,639,099 world wide.
Snakes on a Plane is another movie that tried this type of campaign, however, as everyone saw it did not pan out.

ah, thanks for the numbers. I knew $150 was too low
also carol, I think this movie was effective because some people could imagine it as not being an actual Hollywood "production" but an actual screening of a real videotape that was made and recovered. If you view it as though it was real... which IMO, it did look real.. then you were genuinely freaked out. Was it worth a quarter of a billion dollars? Maybe not, but it just comes to show what a rinky-dink project can amount to.
Also, wasn't it true that when the distributors test screened it, they told the people in the test group that it WAS real? _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
It still looks like a 150 dollar movie to me though. Especially with the camera and the lighting. It wasnt good at all! And the camera was waggly, more looks like amateurish.
Yeah, i've seen the movie and for me, it wasnt good at all. I think the 60000 dollar budget are just for editing, renting of the place they shoot the movie and the directing and payment of the actors in the film.
There's nothing technical about the budget. REALLY!
carol: I saw the movie the day it came out, and have not seen it since. At the time I thought it was a good movie, not as scary as the made it out to be but still a good movie. If you scary/suspense than watch SAW, which is one of the best horror movies in long time.
both carol and xeno: ilovebees was a massive interactive game that was played a few years ago. It is called an Alternate Reality Game. Now what is a ARG? According to Alternate Reality Gaming Network:
"Alternate Reality Gaming is, according to CNET, "...an obsession-inspiring genre that blends real-life treasure hunting, interactive storytelling, video games and online community...
"These games are an intensely complicated series of puzzles involving coded Web sites, real-world clues like the newspaper advertisements, phone calls in the middle of the night from game characters and more. That blend of real-world activities and a dramatic storyline has proven irresistible to many."
Lastly, ilovebees: "The Haunted Apiary (also known as I Love Bees or ILB for short) was an alternate reality game (ARG) that served as a viral marketing campaign for the Halo 2 video game. It is a product of 4orty2wo Entertainment and Sean Stewart, commissioned by Microsoft and approved by Bungie Studios – the creators of Halo 2.
Like all ARGs, The Haunted Apiary was a cross-media game that deliberately blurred the line between in-game and out-of-game experiences. To "play" The Haunted Apiary, interested people would generally visit websites thought to be involved with the game, collect and document the shifting information on these sites, and discuss the game with other users. Players also interacted with the game in unexpected ways, for example by receiving unexpected phone calls from Artificial Intelligence characters, or by sending and receiving emails."
WOW... A game that have nothing to do with Halo 2 and the propoganda was a hit!
Yeah, in the articles you gave me, this game ilovebees was more of a propoganda tool rather than a real game itself, for Halo 2. Now I see what you're getting at but then, what propoganda tool DID BLAIR WITCH PROJECT for selling their movie then?
You cant sell anything if you dont have a propoganda tool to seel it with...
AND YEAH! We just waste money and time on the Blair Witch Project. I think the creators of this movie should be shot... Atleast I didnt watch it on the cinemas...

sweet, thanks for the explanation. I was very curious as to what you were referring to. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
carol: the game was so huge that ARGs have become one of the most popular interenational games. I have participated in 2 or 3 of these games, they are a ton of fun, very addicting and time consuming. That is the main problem. Withregards to Blair Witch, they used a lot of websites and other online videos to create buzz for the movie. (www.blairwitch.com) It was one of the first movies to gain a lot of attention on message boards (like I said, the same type of success Snakes was trying to go for), they also kept on running nation wide campaign about this being a "real" film and a must see. Couple that with word of mouth and all of a sudden you have yourself a real big hit. Funny thing is, they haven't made a "big time" movie since.
xeno: glad to be of help, if you like addicting and very fun games you should try ARGs once, they are a ton of fun. Like a "mature" treasure hunt with thousands of people playing at the same time. If you are interested, I have some experience in them, just ask..
ARG only played in america though, so I cant join even I want to...
About the Blair Witch project: Now I see why this is a hit... Again, another propoganda, but instead of commercials, they used internet to do their dirty scheme!
i feel violated so don't feel bad... there are a ton of ARGs constantly being played both in America and all over the country. Though they might not be as "massive" they still exist. Go to http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/ and you will see the expansive list of games being played, how to make ARGs and what is coming up.
