I was beginning to get sick of cables and wires...
so I'm planning for a wireless connection instead. now, my questions about it.
What are the Disadvantages of having a wireless network? since I already know the advantages of it. (no wires...) _________________ PS3 Trophies

Well, if you are looking at a more hassle-free setup, then maybe wireless connection will be good for you, but unfortunately, that comes at a grievous cost: A much more compromised security.
Since it is using air as media of transfer, it can be used by ANYONE, and that includes a hacker somewhere in your neighbourhood. If they only use your internet, then it is fine, but if they do something to your router and render it useless, that is another big headache, even much more than the more hassles of wires.
And it takes a whole lot of security measures that you need to take. In wired environment, what you have to worry is the data that you receive from internet and also external devices, but with wireless, you also need to worry about the LAN environment that you have created using air as environment, so they CAN also remotely access your PC. That is why wireless can be hassle-free in terms of physical setup, but a lot of hassle in terms of software setup.
That is why you need to look around the net for configuration of wireless and also certain security features in the router that you need to understand and know well and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each security measures that are used in the router.
Another thing to worry is the distance between your PC and the router. If the distance is quite far and blocked by lots of walls, it defeats the purpose too since you will only get weak signals and weak signals can disconnect your connection at the slightest distubance.
But despite all those above, wireless solution can be useful in long-term. Since laptops and PDAs nowadays has become cheaper and affordable, there are bound to have guests and relatives, who will have them, so if they need connections, it is easier to setup instead of the hassle of wires.
In the end, there are pros and cons of each setup. It is entirely up to you to decide. If you do not really mind a bit of security compromise and more work in configuration in favour of hassle-free connection, then you may want to consider wireless. _________________ Innocent Tranquility

all i can say is that it sucks for gaming and also you might have a problem with losing signal(it happens to me ALL the time)but honestly you should stick with the wires _________________ go to www.LRmagic.com for all your magical needs

so basically...Wireless is more less secure than with cables right?
and connection might get cut off at certain conditions...while cables provide steady and more "secure" than wireless..
ok...thanks for the advice guys^^ _________________ PS3 Trophies
On top of security reasons, the response times is generally slower than cabled connections. for instance., mmorpg would prefers cabled .
Wireless connections can be very secured with the right configuration, it gets more complex, of course. Let's say that u need network access in the bathroom(ahem, I don't know why) or stream video to the living room, Wireless connectivity proofs really handy.

I would go both with wireless and lan >< just get a router that supports both though you have to upgrade the software from time to time. For secruity try encrypting the wireless with WEP or I forgot something else though cuz I was messing around with the configs once and found another way to "secure the wireless connection" Umm.... For gameing though I would go with cable, lot faster and you dont have to worry about the connection being disruptted. _________________ COMPETITIVE GAMERS TOURNAMENT

dont forget about linking, if u even invite some friends over and they want to "share" the internet or play the same game with you w/o internet (say starcraft made by blizzard) wireless allows fast hassel-free connection (as stated above) but others whould be able to join you if you forget to set up a WAN password, cable needs no pas just a router (also stated above my post) but the other comp whould have to have the correct TCP/ICP settings.
allin all it jsut comes down to personal preference _________________ Who said the dead wouldnt rise again?!?
