Kanon (2006)

Kitsune --> I think a.f.k changed Hanako and Jiro to Mary and Bob respectively to signify the difference of Japanese names corresponding to male and female names... that was worded really badly.

Because after Yuichi says Jiro(Bob), Nayuki mumbles 'but I'm a girl' ... I think that's why a.f.k translated it like that.

Well as for Kanon so far, I can't comment on much yet, I hadn't seen the 'original' series before, so I can't make comparisons...also can't make comparison's to the game since I haven't played that either... although I see Air all over again, except in winter this time^^"...however I didn't find the animation as striking as it was in Air Confused

There was a horrible production mistake made in this series: the name.

It should be called "memory loss" instead. Kyon...err.. I mean Yuiichi can't remember his past, Makoto barely remembers her name, Ayu only remembers that she's missing something... What the hell? maybe they're not feeding themselves properly.

Hmm...
As a viewer who's seeing Kanon for the first time, I don't bother to make comparisons to the old anime or Haruhi. It's pointless. Sure, its the same seiyuu with Kyon and Yuuichi (if I'm not wrong), and the way they act sometimes when they get irritated are certainly similar, but it doesn't continue from there.

As for comparisons...What the hell, just enjoy the show and the animation. Of course, the storyline looks promising, but I won't compromise my expectations on that. Smile

Side-note: 'Uguu' is good, but somehow I'm starting to prefer 'Auu' over that. Razz

Episode 4 seems to focus a little more on Makoto and Ayu, and perhaps on Mai as well, or it could that one of the scenarios in the episode itself might pave way for a focus on Mai Very Happy

Bummer. Episode 4's already out...
Too little Mai! Confused

Oh well...It's a great episode nonetheless, with Akiko seemingly remembering something about Ayu, probably from the past, which could set up a possible scenario about Yuuichi's forgotten memories in future episodes.

The flashback of how Yuuichi met Ayu was a nice touch, since it states the reason why Ayu likes taiyaki so much as well as a look at the young Yuuichi (helpful and friendly...A little bit off from his grown-up self. Laughing

). MakotoxYuuichi comedy is entertaining as usual, though not as much as the previous episode. Somehow Makoto could seem to be another connection to Yuuichi's past as well...

Lastly, the last part of the episode wonderfully sets up Yuuichi's and Mai's meeting, just like it did with Makoto and the former, though not as aesthetically pleasing as Mai's appearance.

*Already waiting for episode 5 RAWs/fansubs.* Very Happy

So I decided to wait 4 episodes to make this post but I'm here to finally make it. Haruhi was the first anime I watched by Kyoto Animation. Of course I loved it, I don't know anyone who's watched it and not. Once I heard KyoAni had Kanon coming this fall, I couldn't wait to start getting my hands on that. I had heard about the original anime before and it wasn't ever anything bad so I had already wanted to check it out. Anyways, I'm watching this without previous knowledge like most here(though I did go search out ending spoilers). So far the series has exceeded all expectations I've had for it. I like all the characters introduced so far(can't pick whether Makoto or Ayu is my favorite...maybe even Nayuki). Animation has been great, though not necessarily Air or Haruhi quality(I picked up Air after watching the first two episodes of Kanon) it's still better than what comes out of a lot of other studios. Story, from what I know of it, has been good and will be good in the future. Uguu~ and Auu~ are both adorable though niether stands up to gao~ in my opinion. I haven't really found anything to complain about in this series yet. KyoAni just keep surprising me the quality work they do.

i think the animation quality of Kanon is equal if not better than haruhi or AIR. It's hard to tell since theyre all so good (All three from kyoto animation). Too bad i seen the original series and know all of the story.... Despite that, Kanon 2006 is no1 on my watch list.

I'd say better than Air, not as good as Haruhi. You just have to look at things like the band playing in Haruhi to see how much detail went into the production of the animation. The characters actually look like they are playing their instruments (fingers in the right places and everything!), something almost unheard of in anime. So far Kanon has yet to display that quality.

Ayu??? Meh... she's alright. In all honesty, I still wonder why everyone liked her so much... I, myself, am a Mai fan all the way. She carries a sword and doesn't have an annoying phrase that she blurts out every thirty seconds. I swear, every time Ayu or Makoto say "Uguuu" or "Auuuu", I want to throw something at the screen. It annoyed me two years ago, and it's still annoying me now.

Well, Kanon is going ever so slightly slower than its original run. Consequently, people unfamiliar with the work have to wait even longer to experience the awesomeness that is Mai and Saiyuri. Really, they're just that cool.

Well, at least there's always the pretty pictures to look at. This is where the new Kanon almost instantly trumped the original Kanon. Everything is just prettier to look at. KyoAni does the job quite well.

Damn it though! Just end this series quickly and announce the Suzumiya sequel already!!!

I still believe AIR had better animation than Kanon. First off AIR is basically a 12 episode series with an added recap episode thrown in at the end. Thus the budget isn't quite as tight. Also I have yet to see the detail go into a scene in Kanon as some of them in AIR. Look at the scene where Misuzu first breaks down crying, you can see the jump in frames to add more detail to her movements in that scene. Or look at how good the fan looks when Misuzu is first trying to get Yukito to play cards.

Haruhi has just as good animation quality but there's a whole lot more of it. Watch the cups of tea that Mikuru makes and you can see the steam rising from them, or with ENOZ in episode 12 watch Yuki's fingers and Haruhi's face as it contorts to get the lyrics, or also the Asakura/Yuki battle.

Now don't get me wrong, like I said the animation in Kanon is awesome. Kyoto Animation seems to be quite gifted with their ability to make things look absolutely amazing. I'm just saying I have yet to see the quality in Kanon that I did AIR or Haruhi. My guess is KyoAni is actually holding back right now. Saving their budget for when they start getting to the really important scenes later in the series. Kind of like what they did episode 9 Haruhi. They cut corners in that episode to have a bigger budget for other episode/s.

Actually, for episode 9 of Haruhi (if you're talking about Someday in the Rain) that was the only episode that wasn't based off of the manga and was created entirely for the anime itself. Seeing as the show was 14 episodes long when the normal length of an anime is 13 episodes, you can't consider it as them saving money. They specifically went out of their way to create their own episode. That's not saving, that's spending. =P

But the points you speak of, moments in Air and Haruhi that are animated noticably better than other parts of the series... while I do enjoy them (Episode 12 of Haruhi was my favorite because of the performance) you can also consider it a fault. When an episode goes from high quality to truly exceptional animation then back again, that's still inconsistant animation quality, it messes with the flow of the episode. You shouldn't feel the urge to stop an episode on your first time through, just to watch a particular scene a second or third time before finishing the rest of the episode, a truly successful animation job would be getting a person to rewatch an entire episode just for that one scene.

I think certain points in Kanon will most definitely stand out more than others, and the same increase in animation quality will be used to portray the more emotional or dramatic parts, but being spread over 24 episodes, the "Very Good" animation quality will be a lot more prominent, and the "Truly Exceptional" parts will just stick out that much more.

At least that's my predictions. I'm a rather cynical person, and would gladly be proven wrong if KyoAni wishes to do so. =P
