Kanon is indeed pretty-looking, but oherwise it isn't very engaging.

It certainly isn't as engaging as Death Note or Code Geass so far, but I find it pretty interesting still.
Quote:
I think there's less moaning and groaning in porn flicks. At first it was cute, but it is only episode 4 and I'm already getting sick of it.

I don't see the parallels between 'porn' and moaning and groaning for Kanon Confused

And it's exactly because it's only episode 4 that we can't judge how repetitive the series is already.
Quote:
The whole anmesia epidemic is really getting on my nerves; I just don't buy it. The characters so far haven't really displayed anything of interest.

Certainly not, from a skeptic's point of view. I assume then, you haven't had a gist of what the original story of Kanon is about, so I guess feeling this way is understandable.

Quote:
Yuuichi... well, for the moment it is like Kyon got teleported to another world and given a different hairstyle.

It gets kinda tiring hearing comparisons between Kyon and Yuuichi. I don't mind the fact that they have the same seiyuu, but saying Yuuichi is the parallel of Kyon isn't really right. In terms of personality, we can't judge Yuuichi completely yet, but I would say he's a normal high school male who enjoys teasing some people (Ayu, Makoto). Perhaps to similarity (probably the only one I can think of other than being a normal high school student) would be the fact that Yuuichi thinks quite a bit.
His cousin is the only character I'm getting any feel of.

Quote:
If the original Kanon went like this, so far nothing makes me think I missed much by not watching it.

Take an example from another anime:

Gundam Seed Destiny started out spectacularly. How did it fare as it progressed and ended? It was a big joke, no less. The worst of the Gundam series.

So far, Kanon certainly seems to be like a typical harem anime with typical characters (So? originality has been played to death already), and the girls certainly seemed a little superficial in terms of how they are being portraited. (Note that no one is practically able [or is shown] to hold an intelligent conversation with him so far-maybe except for Kaori.) but I'm pretty sure enjoyment shouldn't come from first impressions alone-Some of it requires patience as well.

I guess my last post came out more aggressive than I intended it to. I'm not saying that kanon sucks, what I'm saying is that I had high expectations for Kanon, and I'm a dissapointed that it didn't meet them. By episode 4 I knew I wasn't going to be dropping MOHS, I was expecting at least the same from Kanon. I guess it was unreasonable to think so, but since it was prioritized over that, I though it would have more "oomph!" to it.

Quote:

Laughing I don't mean quality, I mean amount. They are suppossed to be character trademarks, but if evey other line of theirs is "Guu...." and "Auu...", they are abused really fast. If they use them as much as they have so far they are really going to be a real pain in the future. it's only ep 4 and they are getting tiresome already!

Quote:

That's correct, I haven't. They've kinda poked and thrown hints of what the storyline will be, but so far it still hasn't arrived yet. I'm guessing they're gonna start sometime soon, because you can only introduce characters whithout them doing anything in so many episodes.

And seriously... amnesia? Everybody? There could be better ways to have people sit around. There will probably be a reason for it later on, but... Let's just say that more than mysterious, right now it seems a pointless exaggeration.

I agree. A good anime can conceibably have slow beginning chapters (Fafner is among my favorites and it's beginning was just average), but I guess that I didn't think this would be the case. In retrospective it was an unreasonable expectation, but the fact that it wasn't met still bothers me a bit.

EDIT: Grammar and spelling

Actually, for episode 9 of Haruhi (if you're talking about Someday in the Rain) that was the only episode that wasn't based off of the manga and was created entirely for the anime itself. Seeing as the show was 14 episodes long when the normal length of an anime is 13 episodes, you can't consider it as them saving money. They specifically went out of their way to create their own episode. That's not saving, that's spending. =P

But you see, it was still planned as a 14 episode series, thus still saving money by cutting back on one. Actually I wouldn't be surprised to learn it was planned for more episodes thus they had a bit a larger budget than most 13 episode series. My point is that wether or not they created that episode by themselves, it was still added into the budget when they started and was used as a place to save some money so they could put more into other scenes. I believe the money was actually used for the Yuki/Asakura fight. Also, Haruhi is not based off a manga, it's based off a novel series. The Manga is actually still behind the anime.

heh, Yuuichi does seem like a copy of kyon but thats only cause of the animation. I think the Kanon game came out b4 haruhi did so he cant rly be a copy anyways. And im pretty sure Kyoani isn't gonna release another sequel for haruhi anytime soon. They r a pretty small company and usually only work on one series at a time. Beside in 2007 they r already planning to animate Lucky Star. As for the animation, we rly cant say much since only 4 eps r out. The suffixes Auuu, Uguuu, Gao r all trademarks of Key, the company that makes the games, and gained immense popularity in Visual Novels. In fact Kanon and Air are few of the best known visual novels which gave them their popularity to start with. And ppl has to realize that KyoAni just animates the series the story is already made up by other companies. ex
Mohs from haruhi novels and Kanon/Air from Games by Key. So the only thing we can actually compare is the animation.

Oh as for the memory loss.... Yeah I see how it can get annoying since nothing makes sense but thats just how the story goes. Think of it as a mystery and Kanon will slowly unravel the mystery how everything is connected together as more episodes are being aired.

Quit complaining that they axed MOHS in favour for Kanon... Remember, MOHS isn't even complete yet, so if they tried to keep on producing it, it'll end up with the "ever so boring and repetitive" fillers in MOHS. I bet that they will be working on a second season in 1 year or so once a few more novels comes out. Depending on the author, the anime might have a 3rd season or might end with OVAs.

As for Kanon, yay for better artwork! Yuuichi is no longer a pain to look at!!!

ummm.....Haruhi is something 8 books in...the anime only took from the first 2. The filler you saw in the anime is actually the way the books are. The heavy plot all comes real quick in the first book and I think going into the second then it's basically all about the SOS Brigade keeping Haruhi from being bored. So you see they have plenty of material to work from still. They might only have the first 2 books translated but I don't know for sure, I lost my link to the site the translations were on.

See, MOHS is quite a different anime from Kanon-In fact, quite a different anime from ANY other I've seen, at least. It mixes severla genres together well-Humor, a bit of action here, a bit of sci-fi there...Besides, one should expect a slow pacing of storyline for Kanon. It is, after all, a supposed 'harem' sort of anime, where development jumps from one girl to another slowly until we get to the more serious parts. I recall Canvas2 having somewhat of a similar pattern to Kanon too...

Anyway, episode 5 just aired. As expected, lots of Mai. Very Happy I won't hide the fact that I'm a Mai fan, but the episode contains the typical kind of humor between a male and a female for Yuuichi and Makoto, while as I stated above, the development also jumps from Mai to Makoto to Shiori to Mai again.

Mai and Sayuri made their appearances! I'm quite happy! If only their stories could last the whole series, I think I could come out of this anime a happy man. Alas, we'll have to deal with those dreadful "Uguus" and "Auuus"...

Finally. All the major characters have gotten adequate screentime (at least, enough to get screenshots for STUDD pictures). Time to watch this anime purely on enjoyment now. Let's hope I don't get too disinterested in this story like last time.

Well, considering that you don't seem to like Ayu that much, you should be glad that she wasn't given much screentime this episode. Laughing It's amazing though...
How Yuuichi has suddenly turned into a ladies' man. Not that it's an entirely bad thing, of course, but he seemed to be able to handle talking to any female thus far.

Last time? Are you talking about the original anime or perhaps something else?

From what I heard, the premises of the story seemed quite interesting. I'm just waiting to see how the transition from light-hearted to something else occurs as well as a high expectation of how they will bring across Mai's story.

I like the "Uguu"s, (not so much the "Auuu"s, but they're still okay) and anyone who disagrees with me can go to HELL!!! Or not. Whatever you feel like, really.

I'm finding this anime to be really good so far. I have no prior knowledge of the story, so that's probably helping. It's got a nice mysterious, laid back feel to it and it looks gorgeous. Sure, it's not as good as MoHS was, but then who's to say they won't bugger the next series of MoHS up?

I'm quite satisfied with what we've got right now. If they bring out a new series of MoHS, great! If it's really good, even better! But lets not bitch about what we might have got, had god been nicer, and let's not get on the back of what we HAVE got just because it's not MoHS. At the end of the day, they're completely different anime.

'Auu' is annoying, I've decided...

I watched the original anime. Wasn't all that fond of the story...

Mostly the resolutions of the Makoto and Ayu arcs. You'll soon find out and you can judge for yourselves.

I'm watching merely for Mai and Sayuri at this point. They had some picnic action in the most recent episode. =)

Name - Nickname - my opinion

Ayu - "Uguu" girl - blah...
Makoto - "Auuu" girl - more blah...
Shiori - "sick" girl - she's not too bad
Nayuki - "cousin" girl - gets stood up a lot, I feel bad for her
Mai - "demon hunter" girl - she's awesome, enough said
Akiko - "jelly" mom - I like her
Sayuri - "cook" girl - she's almost as awesome as Mai, her only downfall is lack of swordplay
Kaori - "class rep" girl - I forget her whole role in this...shoot, I remember now =/ meh...

I believe that's all the girls you need to know.

On the plus side, Yuuichi isn't the jerk that I remembered him to be from the earlier anime (one of my main gripes from the original). Makes him a LOT easier to relate to.

Well, good for the Visual novels. In the anime they don't seem to be doing that well.

Ep 5 was a nice change of pace. New, more likeable girls. I didn't think it was possile, but Mai's (lack of) talk makes Yuki look like a campaigning politician. Damn, was she quiet. And Sayuri is just cute and doesn't have any sound to make every 5 seconds. that's a double positive in my book.

lol. I agree with this so far. Maybe in the future that will change... Maybe makoto and Ayu will become more tolerable. Yuiichi is also developing nicely as well. I liked the prank he pulls off on the "grown up" Makoto. Clever.

I still can't say I'm excited about the next episode, but moderately interested. Although I have to admit that for an unbeliever like me, Kanon is indeed getting more interesting, bit by bit. Certainly not a 5 star anime right now, but it could be building up potential.

I don't recall Yuki being that silent, either. Besides, Mai is certainly one of the main reasons I'm watching as well. As for Sayuri....
I read from a profile about her that her personality's basically more 'lady-like'/refined in a way, so I guess that's why she doesn't really have a catchphrase. Laughing That would perhaps explain her behavior and abilities as well-Being able to cook extremely well, humble, seem rather outgoing and cheerful as well as hold a proper and amiable conversation with the ladies' man. Laughing

I thought Sayuri was more interesting than Makoto or Ayu, and even Nayuki currently. That being said, it's only been one episode where we've seen her, but still, it delights me as to how she's able to talk to Yuuichi on more equal terms with him. (Note that whenever Yuuichi interacts with Ayu or Makoto especially, it always ends up in them 'pouting' for some reason.

Still...Mai FTW. (Don't know how many times I said that in other forums already.) Razz

I've decided that Yuuichi is just a bit of a b*st*rd. He's really harsh to virtually all the girls in this anime, most notably Makoto. But he also tells each of them off all the time, and pokes fun at them as well! Honestly, for a Harem lead, he's one harsh guy.

On another note,

Nayuki seems to be falling asleep more and more. I wonder if that's going somewhere, or if it really is just a character thing...

I like Ayu. I'm going to keep saying it. She's cute. So what if she says Uguu?
