I may have difficulty keeping up with this particular subject..
Anyways, we all know about the advantages torwards BR (kind of). To start things off, there's the unique blue-violet laser which is supposed to be better because of the its short wavelength and greater precision. In result, the data placed on the BD is allowed to be packed tightly, making room for more space.
And...right. Feedback please.
Oh, and don't mind me putting this in the entertainment. I consider FFA to be spammified, so I always try to avoid making threads there. _________________

Well, you kinda helped the spammification go along spam mod, but on topic:
I'm looking forward to actually getting a blu-ray player. I kinda just wanna see the difference, but the price being so high, I've got to wait for the PS3 to come out so I can at least get a system with the player. _________________ [img:450:200:d0a28f8b61]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/9979.jpg[/img:d0a28f8b61]

does this mean that the current DVD Discs that I got will become obselete? I hope not.
I wonder how much will a Blu-ray player will cost compared to a Standard DVD player? I hope they put "more" stuff on the Discs this time since it CAn hold larger files than a DVD cd can. _________________ PS3 Trophies

Itachi - Vile peer pressure, I say!
Rai - The cheapest player there is is at $750, and that's from the Samsung BD-P1000. And then there's the Pioneer BDP-HD1 going at $1500. All for at least two pretty pennies.
The FAQ from the Blu-ray website answers the question about BD taking over DVD as well as talking about the disc costs:
Quote:
What will Blu-ray products cost?
As with any new technology the first generation of products will likely be quite expensive due to low production volumes. However, this shouldn't be a problem for long as there is a wide range of Blu-ray related products (players, recorders, drives, writers, media, etc) planned, which should help drive up production volumes and lower overall production costs. Once mass production of components for Blu-ray products begins the prices are expected to fall quickly.
According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the overall cost of manufacturing Blu-ray Disc media will in the end be no more expensive than producing a DVD. The reduced injection molding costs (one molding machine instead of two, no birefringence problems) offset the additional cost of applying the cover layer and low cost hard-coat, while the techniques used for applying the recording layer remain the same. As production volumes increase the production costs should fall and eventually be comparable to DVDs.
Will Blu-ray replace DVDs?
Yes, that's the expectation. The Blu-ray format has received broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Seven of the eight major movie studios have already announced titles for Blu-ray, including Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate. The initial line-up is expected to consist of over 100 titles and include recent hits as well as classics such as Batman Begins, Desperado, Fantastic Four, Fifth Element, Hero, Ice Age, Kill Bill, Lethal Weapon, Mission Impossible, Ocean's Twelve, Pirates of the Caribbean, Reservoir Dogs, Robocop, and The Matrix. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month.
However, the two formats (Blu-ray and DVD) will most likely co-exist for quite some time until HDTVs become more widespread. For a complete list of the announced movies, please see our Blu-ray Movies section.
It may possible be rising to the top, even as we speak. _________________
DVDs will definitely become obsolete. DVD is already reaching the life span the regular CDs had. Actually, according to this article, PS3's 25GB Blu-ray discs are already filling up to its limit. Advantage? A lot: more hi-def cutscenes, more textures, more levels, more galores. And not to forget, 7.1 audio. Unlike the Xbox360 which relies heavily upon compress/uncompressing, the load would be lighter on the PS3 since it won't have to uncompress and calculate so much. Having more space would also help the PS3 to lessen the conflict in cache, helping the loading times faster. Sony's planning to move to 50GB BD next year.
Even though there are chips being able to read HD-DVD and BD on the same drive, the DVDs won't phase out so fast for the drive for both medias have backward-compatibility with the previous generation of optical mediums. Also, the music industry is planning to use DVDs as a medium for music, replacing our current CD albums. They already have audio DVD players planning to be sold.
However, with the two new different formats battling it out with competetion, the transition or the dying age of DVD may come faster than we'd think.. HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies cost around $60 USD right now and they have a plan of selling them as the same price as the DVDs next year. I'm not sure if HD-DVD can get any higher than dual-layer 30GB. Last August, TDK was able to develop 200GB capacity for Blu-ray.
A different method of storage that is on the arising as well is called holographic storage. Worth checking out.
