The few animes that stand out to be me as being epic are mainly because I can put myself in that main characters shoes. Know what he's really feeling. Total empathy.
This rarely happens though and as a result, I tend to watch anime that have a good plot to them.
As for intentionaly sitting down to watch anime so as to learn japanese, not really. Obviously you pick up the odd word now and then sub-conciously and it sticks ie. 'Baka!' and 'Arigato'.
Fan-service. Not for me. Unless it's Ikki Tousen or the like, who's plot is so bad that the only reason you'd watch it in the first place is to see the clothes on the girls being ripped to shreds, and their boobs bouncing everywhere.
Another reason I might sit down to watch anime is to change my mood. For example: if I'm in an overly depressive state (which seems to be all the time now), I'll sit down to a Studio Ghibli film like My Neighbour Totoro, which will without a doubt have me jumping and smiling with joy again.

must the answer always be complicated?
i watch anime cause it gives me joy, simply joy. It gives me a place to get away from reality, to give me a place to forget pains and just let my imagination flow, like Asperger's disease but not quite. sure i can learn a bit of japanese, stare at impossible proportions, and of course it provides me a decent story but that happens as a side effect for me really. It's like the Brit said, if i'm not feeling so good, anime always changes my mood. Unless, of course, you watch chrono crusade, that will never be able to make me feel good _________________ ALL HAIL LELOUCH
Hmm you might want to ask for special reasons instead...
To me, it's simple...
I got sick of TV (i kept looking at the flaws a actor can make)
I get bored of games fast
I dun have a game console...
Sick of DoTA, totally
etc etc
yo my main entertainment currently is only Anime (and Manga)
I'm into anime because I can easily believe the plot than I would for live-action. It always amaze me how fictional characters can stir great emotion and story that questions Hollywood loves to remake. _________________
Interesting. I watch anime mostly because I'm bored. However, I tend to be a bit choosy in particular about what I watch... I mainly like good animes/mangas with a good storyline, and also to learn a little Japanese XD I wana travel to japan sometime later.
I watch anime as a hobby and interest. It serves as an outlet for frustration sometimes. This can help improve character analysis especially when I got my Psych class last semester. _________________

There are many reasons why people watch animes or read mangas...

I'm going to go off of what you used as examples...
Quote:
-a manga/anime might really connect to you (you can empathize with the main character?)
YES - there seems to be much character development as characters face different obstacles. To me, it seems as though anime characters aren't afraid to change (or even die), unlike in live-action series where actors/actresses only care about how a character makes them look career-wise. A real-live actor would never agree to kill their character because it means they're out of a job (though they DO sometimes die, it's mostly the writers having to "kill off" someone because the actor's contract wasn't renewed)

-a good storyline suitable to one's taste
YES - this is the main draw for me. Anime series have a set-length, so we know that there will always be a beginning, a middle, a climax, and then an ENDING!!! Though some series do go on and on forever, most animes wrap things up nice and neatly in 13 or 26 episodes.

-want to learn japanese?
KINDA - I don't think I could "learn" japanese from watching anime, but I can learn some vocabulary and about their culture. If I were taking an actual japanese learning class, anime would be the perfect suplamental material, but I've been watching anime in japanese for abnout 2 and a half years and I STILL can't put a single sentence together. I know plenty of object words though.

-want to stare at oversized boobs?
KINDA - well, yeah, anime girls are hot and some are hotter than real-life girls, but it's not really a "reason" to watch anime. It's more like an added bonus. Plus, as it's been discussed in the "are you disturbed by the trend in overly-sized boobs" thread, there is a such thing as TOO big. I prefer normal-sized girls.
those are my big reasons, but overall, I watch anime becuase it's fun, cultural, entertaining, and a little more emotional than anything I could find on American TV. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
well i think ppl in 19th century entertain themselves by reading novels
then after ages watching TVs and the last one, the modren ages watching animes. heehee ^___^
that was in general but to me i watch to learn from everything
and some of them are for joy since there are many things dont exist in
reality. _________________

I should also mention that now I think I have a otaku obsession over anime. Not the kind where I'll dress and have room full of figures and poster. But a weird obsession that I can't let go. Can't explain. -_- _________________
Otaku are more of a term that are used to describe
1. (in the bad way) a person with no life, so the person spend most of his time watching anime as his only source of entertainment.
2. (in the good way) a person who describes himselfs as a person heavily devoted to anime and prouds of it.
So do not have to nessasary be an otaku even if you're obsessed with anime.
