...alternative title: "The Passion of the Christ"
I went to see this today and was somewhat disappointed. A film by christians for christians, I think anyone else would probably find it audible and visual pornography - at least, that was the impression I was left with. I just didn't get the point at all. It was literally about watching a man get tortured for 2 hours. There was little dialogue so, besides the feeling or anguish for anyone who is flogged within an inch of his life, there was no reason to care particularly for his suffering (unless you're a christian).
It was quite arrogant as well. The two other executees almost seemed to be smiling as they were nailed to their crosses. Meanwhile Jesus seemed to attract the sadists. Everybody who wasn't Jesus or a christian was depicted as a heartless, sadistic or selfish bastard. The roman guards who spent the duration of the film as merciliess thugs who enjoyed beating Jesus turned into whimpering children at the end of the film, although no explanation was offered as to why they had this sudden change of heart. I guess we're just supposed to accept it because it's Jesus, the king of kings and he moves people like that. The only real character in the film was Ponchus Pilot. Everybody else was a walking cliché, right down to the villainous murderer who got released (who had scars down his face, was missing an eye and most of his front teeth and who cackled like a witch for good measure). It was so cringeable my toes were getting sore from all the clenching they had to do.
As you might suspect, I didn't like this much. I suspect it will cause much debating and discussion amongst christians but I don't think it's going to appeal to anyone else, unless they enjoy gratuitous violence.
Personally I liked this movie even though you're right about there being a whole lot of torturing. I think that's kinda the point of the movie though. It's all about the sacrifices made for the sake of man. Well, if you've ever seen any of the other movies relating to this topic they usually start from the beginning of Jesus's life, how he was born, how he grew up, how he taught, etc. etc. It's interesting to see a change for once as this one focused on just the last hours.
The violence though grotesque seems to me more realistic, and I think mostly serves to support the sacrifice He made for us. I imagine what really happened wasn't so different even though I'm sure it's arguable from person to person.

If any arguments are to be raised that this film is supposed to be an accurate depiction of what a spiritual figure had went through... don't.
It is not historically correct and has many factual errors. Not least is the point of them being cruficied through their palms. As science and history records have shown crucifications are nailed through the wrists. The palms have no bones or strength to hold up the human body. The cruficied would fall down, ripping his palms apart within a day at most (the nailings at the feet would not help to support his torso's weight).
Then there is the carrying of their own crosses up the hill. Nope, first there is no real 'crosses' just rough shod built cross-posts. Then the post is already erected before the crucification by the authorities.
Personally I think this is a film designed to up your emotions. It is a film, not a historical or factual record.

Haven't gotten a chance to watch this movie but i think i get the gist of it. I think most everyone is well aware that this movie is not historical as Yeb stated with the wrists not the hands, and that. I just wanted to point out what Ege said, mainly the part that says that she felt the violence mainly served to support the sacrifice.
Seems to me that she knows that the movie itself is not REAL. As for whether or not this displays the deeds of a religious leader in his final hours or not, it's up to the viewer really. You're preferences and religious beliefs.

I think that generic-coolname was right when he said it was a movie by Christians made for Christians. I personally did not like the movie, two hours of watching a man get tortured is not for me. I came away from the movie thinking that there was no real point in making it entertainment wise. If there was a point in making the movie, I think it would be that they wanted to give young impressionable minds one hell of a guilt trip(for those who believe in Jesus). My two cents at least… _________________ Need help adding an image to your signature? Click here then.

I take you point on this and I was thinking I might have liked it a lot better if it had been the sequal to an earlier film in which we got to know Jesus, his diciples and the place where they lived. I also wondered if they held back from characterising Jesus with dialogue because then they'd be creating a character for Jesus and this might be seens as blasphemy. Even so this would have been justification for the current context.
Maybe they should ship the DVD with a copy of the new testiment, or something because, as it stands, it's just one big blood fest. I'm trying to judge the film on its own merits, not with the aid of the bible. Think about it this way: would you have liked it if it had been about somebody other than Jesus (which it might as well have been) or if you didn't know the story of the crucifixion.

LOL gen, ouch ouch.
I'm a christian but not one who is especially inspired by the bible so this movie doesn't interest me in the least. When it came out, a lot of my friends went to see and were telling me to go see it but.. no. The film is all about the last hours of christ, so to someone who isn't especially moved by the bible it would be nothing more than a a few hours of anguish and torture. I have read a lot of the bible, since my mother wanted me to be familliar with it, and knowing how the last hours of christ are portrayed i'ld rather not see the visual interpretation. _________________ [IMG:508:164:6c8e3c695e]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/inqArk/Original_sig.jpg[/img:6c8e3c695e]

Understandable that you should feel that way. I think the producers of this film were depending on the audience to know some common knowledge from the Bible though. Even though there are plenty of people that aren't Christian, most everyone knows the basic storyline and maybe even some of the ideas behind it all. I think the beginning of Jesus's life was cut out just so that the ending part could be more focused on and more thoroughly detailed according to the producer's interpretation of the story.
Well it is about how the bible said Jesus died on the cross so ya. Even though ur right about how its practically like him getting tortured. It just seems so painful
