Posted: Mon Jan 08, 2007 8:39 pm Post subject: what's the purpose of restricting the manga levels?
To protect readers from explicit material?
To motivate others to contribute to A-S?
It does neither. I always thought of the manga library of A-S as rather cute (not the right word but can't think of anything else). Other websites hold more than 10 times as much manga and do not restrict manga to users.
And no matter the age, anyone can contribute to A-S and get the points for reading the restricted manga.

Partially, but no.

Partially, but not exactly.

Wrong...

Cute.. lol... thanks!
Anyway, (and don't take this the wrong way) we're not other websites that "hold 10 times as much manga". We are who we are, and we work in our own messed up way. It is exactly because the point system is flawed that Manga levels have been lowered and kept low; only 1 manga remains at level 4 and it is likely to go down as well. All other mangas are level 1 or 2. level 2 only requires membership to the site; not points. Is the fact that one manga is restricted such a big deal? Many "other websites with 10 times as much manga" also require membership, don't they?
Now, the point of the points system is also to regulate bandwith usage. The old manga module crashed A LOT because too many people tried to acess it at the time, making the use of access restictions necessary. The new one is far more stable, but regulation is useful for tests and kinda to make sure how the server puts up with demand. Also, in the past, website points were used for anime direct downloads and other things. Since A-S has lost those other things for various other reasons, the only remaining thing for points to be used is the manga section. In that sense, it is a bit of a nostalgic leftover, but the point system was suppossed to allow for more things and because

Some members have been here a long time, they partipate and helped build A-Source. This is our way of tracking them and some bonuses are restricted to a certain point level and that is our way of rewarding them.
(directly from the FAQ)
Second of all, I'd argue that Access restriction does not fail to encourage participation, as you point out. In the past months that I have been working in the reviews section I have seen people submit 2 or 10 reviews, exactly the necessary for access. Some are good, some are bad, but either way, I doubt we'd get several these if it weren't for the incentive that the Manga offers. I believe that in some cases people start liking to write reviews and eventually write more too, even though the "manga access objective" is already cleared. If it results in at least some people taking their own reviews and ideas more seriously, I'm glad it happened.
As for the whole "explicit material" thing I'll admit it: the point system is by NO MEANS an age verification one. At most, all it can do is restrict acess for people too lazy to try and get points, those who don't care, or those who cannot get them because of rejected submissions for various reasons. Still, submitting content requires a certain level of "intellectual maturity" (for lack of a better expression), and that works as some kind of a filter. It's not a good filter, it is not an age filter, but it is some sort of a filter. Since the point system's primary objective is not that, then we have "mature content" warnings and advise discretion when accessing manga. And until someone comes up with an actual age verification system, such warnings are all we can feasibly use. _________________
