Will you purchase official subbed versions of anime that are distributed online?
Yes, if the company is selling their product I don't have a right to the free fansub.

No, I'll continue to look for fansubed versions and buy the DVDs later if I am so inclined.

I heard that the Death Note series is going to try selling offical subbed episodes online for much less than what the DVDs will be when they are released. I think its a good idea, but I wonder if it will work.

who is "the Death Note series"? are you talking about the people who MADE Death Note or the fansub group that subtitled it?

The ONLY people who can legally sell are the people who made the anime and anyone that they license it to. Independant fansub groups cannot print DVDs and sell them as they wish... they would be pirates. I can easily overlook fansubbers posting their work for free, but I do not condone piracy/bootlegging.

More info please

oooooo

it is split down the middle (50/50)

I would download the subbed version to see if the anime is good, if the anime is really good, then I will be inclined to buy it.

Very Happy

Hey! No copying! -________-

Selling official subs? Thats sounds like making money off of desperate fans that can't wait for the DVD or can't afford the DVD.

Its confirm illegal.
Even if it is, I will never buy. What is a fansub? FAN SUB. SUBTITLED BY FANS FOR FANS. you're not gonna make money out of fellow fans as a fansubs. You're just someone who tries to make money out of translating RAWs, which are released to fansub to boost popularity, NOT MAKE MONEY

Well I don't know if it's going to happen or not, but what I was referring to was the actual producer of the show, the owner, offering a subbed version for sale. Obviously fansubbers aren't allowed to sell anything as they have no rights to what they are translating in the first place. I thought I was being clear but I guess I should have elaborated better.

I don't know japanese, or have any association with a fansub group.

My thinking is that the producers surely know how much money they lose by the free distribution of fansubs so they are trying to come up with a way to compensate for some of the loss.

Acutally, fansubs is legal, because those producers or whatever used them to gain popularity. Without fansubs they might lose even more moeny. Besides, they asked the fansubs to cease distribution after licensing.

if you really like an anime you should buy it to support it, altho i feel that fansubs are a lot more passionate than professional subs, while dubs usually stinks your ears and nose.

where i live it's next to impossible to find them selling anime in stores, so the only way to get it here is ordering online, which is not very safe (also because of local reasons).

Although Xeno prolably knows already I'll be more specific, since Martin here esplains the deal only in broad strokes and people who don't watch death note will be confused as hell.

Viz media acquired the license to the death note anime. As part of their distribution procedures for the series, Viz will start a "Download to Own" project, in which you'll basically buy the official subbed (not dubbed) episodes from Viz and download them to your computer. The price is supposedly drastically lower than that of a DVD, so you can have official versions of the anime both as software on your computer and as a DVD (with a dub and all the other extras) on your shelf. The image quality will probably be better than you average anime fansub too. This could be the first step in which licensing companies would distribute official licensed anime online at a fraction of the cost of the DVDs.

Personally, I'm not interested in the case of Death note. I'll buy the DVDs when they come out, so why pay for online copies which would be subpar compared to that anyway? I guess that I'd buy the official subs if the series doesn't interest me enough to buy a dvd but enough to want to own an official version of it. I however, do like the job that fansub groups do with karaokes, notes, the translation of written text, etc that licensed anime does not have, and that is bound to influence my future decisions as well.

I wholeheartedly agree. If I were to own Death Note, it will be in the form of official DVDs (oh yes, this is one anime which I'd definitely buy). If I watch the anime on the computer and like it so much, what should I do if I want to get a copy? Burn it on DVD-R? Oh, I don't think I should do that. If I already 'pay' the money to the creators/licensors, I expect to receive official DVD in return, not just being able to watch one episode on computer.

I own the complete series of Death Note manga (official, of course) in my language. But for the anime, I will wait for the official DVDs (I am not even d/ling it, because I know that this anime would be good Wink. Hence, it's worth buying.)

Thanks for clarifying Leo, it wasn't my intention to confuse anybody and I honestly didn't know the specifics about the deal anyway. I was mainly interested in a poll to see what people thought of the concept in general.

So far it seems mostly unanimous that people would prefer to wait for the DVDs with the one exception being me. My thinking is that if I want to watch the anime so much that I'm not willing to wait for the DVDs to come out then it should inherantly be valuable enough to spend the extra money on the online version.

I agree, however, that the fansub versions seem to be a higher quality translation at times which can be dissapointing when you finally own the DVD.
